MMA Decorative Quartz

What it is

MMA decorative quartz is the coloured-quartz floor rebuilt for speed. The idea is identical to our Quartz Broadcast Epoxy: a resin body coat, coloured quartz sand broadcast to excess into the wet surface, the loose grain swept off, clear seals over the top. What changes is the chemistry carrying it. Methyl methacrylate — MMA, sometimes written PMMA once cured — is a cold-cure acrylic resin: mix in the hardener and each coat is rock-hard in an hour or two, at room temperature or in a chiller. A complete decorative floor, broadcast and sealed, can go down tonight and carry trolleys tomorrow morning.

Choosing between the two versions is refreshingly simple, and we will always say which side of the line a project falls on. The epoxy version is the more common and the cheaper of the pair — when a washroom or kitchen can hand us the space for a few days, it is the sensible buy. The MMA version earns its premium in exactly two situations: when the programme is measured in hours, and when the room is cold. Epoxy cures grudgingly or not at all in a chilled store; MMA does not care. That is why supermarkets, food factories and cold-chain operators — trades that never close and never warm up — standardised on it long ago.

Two honest notes. First, the smell: liquid MMA monomer has a strong, penetrating odour during installation. It disappears completely once the floor has cured, but the hours in between need sealed-off work zones, forced ventilation and a client who knew it was coming — we plan that with you, not around you. Second, the finish is the same working register as its epoxy sibling: textured, hygienic, tunable grip — a floor for wet service areas and ramps, not a showpiece mirror. Where it comes from

Methacrylate flooring grew up in mid-century European industry and found its natural home in food retail and processing, where floors fail on a Friday and must be trading on a Saturday. The decorative quartz version is what happened when that overnight chemistry met the coloured sand of the hygiene trades — a floor fast enough for a live supermarket and presentable enough for its customers. In the UAE, where retail and F&B genuinely run around the clock, that logic lands hard: the fit-out that cannot close is not the exception here, it is the norm.
