What is resin bound gravel? It is natural stone or gravel mixed with clear resin and hand-trowelled into one smooth, permeable layer, also called stone carpet, resin bound flooring or a resin floor for outdoors. It is not the same as loose gravel, and not the same as resin bonded, where dry stone is scattered over a resin coat. Resin bound is a seamless “stone carpet”: natural aggregate mixed with clear resin and hand-trowelled to a smooth, permeable finish. Because the stone and resin are blended together and laid as one, the surface has no joints — nothing to crack, lift or weed — and rain drains straight through it rather than pooling on top.

It’s also where RBS began. Long before the encyclopedia of surfaces we lay today, the company grew out of this one craft, and we still produce our resin in-house rather than buying it ready-made. That matters most in the Gulf: we use a UV-stable aliphatic resin so a driveway or pool surround holds its colour under the sun instead of ambering the way cheaper systems do.

Customers in Dubai ask for it as a stone carpet, a resin bound gravel driveway, a permeable or porous driveway, or simply resin bound. It is the same craft: washed natural gravel or marble aggregate, bound in clear UV-stable resin and hand-trowelled into one seamless, draining surface — the opposite of a loose gravel drive that migrates and ruts, and of a sealed slab that puddles. Whatever you call it, the price and the build-up on this page are what you will get. How a stone carpet job runs, stage by stage

Most of a resin bound job is not the trowelling. It is the base — which is also where the jobs that fail were lost. The order never changes:

Site visit	The base is assessed — sound concrete, asphalt, or bare ground — along with falls, drainage, edges and thresholds. Aggregate blend chosen from physical samples, not a screen
Preparation	The base is repaired and made good, or a new area gets a compacted, load-bearing sub-base. If the base cannot drain, it is fixed here or the finished surface cannot drain either — a permeable surface over a sealed slab just moves the puddle underground
Edges	Kerbs, thresholds and drainage channels are fixed, because the mix has to be trowelled against a firm edge to hold its depth
Priming	The substrate is primed where it calls for it
Laying	Aggregate and our UV-stable resin are mixed in measured batches and hand-trowelled to an even depth in one continuous pass — 6–10 mm for paths, courtyards and interior floors, 15–18 mm on a vehicle-rated base
Cure	The surface is left to cure before use. Foot traffic and cars come back at different times, and we give the window for your job and the season

Two honest constraints. Resin bound is best laid in settled weather, and Gulf heat shortens the working time of every batch — which is why a crew that has laid it through a UAE summer mixes to the conditions rather than to a printed table. A courtyard or path is usually a single day; a driveway is a day or two.

A worked example: a 120 m² villa driveway

Take a 120 m² front driveway, laid over a sound existing slab:

• Rate: resin bound starts from AED 170/m², plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project, so 120 m² starts from around AED 23,900, supply and install (120 × 170 + 3,500). Per square foot the rate is roughly AED 16 — the same figure divided by 10.764 — plus the same fee.
• What that buys: 15–18 mm of washed natural aggregate in UV-stable resin, on a base prepared to carry a car, with fixed edges and a surface that drains through rather than to a channel.
• What would move it: a base that has to be broken out and rebuilt, an old drive that must be removed first, tight access for the mixer, or a premium imported aggregate.
• What we will not do: lay a driveway in the thin 6–10 mm foot-traffic build to bring the number down. It looks identical on the day it is laid and comes apart under the first car. If a driveway quote does not say how thick the build is and what base it sits on, that is the question to ask.

The heat row is the one most often oversold in this market, so it is worth being plain: colour and mass decide how hot a surface gets far more than the binder does, and no outdoor surface in the UAE is comfortable barefoot at midday in summer. The faults that show up in stone carpet, and what prevents each one

Every one of these is a preparation or a mixing decision, not a flaw in the material:

• Stones coming loose underfoot. The mix was resin-starved, mixed off-ratio, or trowelled after it had begun to go off in the heat. Prevented by measured batches and by working to the day’s temperature rather than to a fixed pot life.
• A surface that ambers or hazes by the second summer. A cheaper aromatic resin was used outdoors. We use a UV-stable aliphatic grade for exactly this reason.
• Puddles on a surface sold as permeable. Either the base underneath is sealed, so the water has nowhere to go, or the pores have silted up with fine sand. The first is a build fault and cannot be fixed from the top; the second is a wash.
• A crack that appears in a line. The base moved and the surface telegraphed it. Resin bound is only ever as stable as what it is laid on, which is why the site visit spends its time on the base.
• Edges crumbling back. The mix was trowelled without a firm restraint to work against, so the perimeter was never at full depth.

How to compare two stone carpet quotes in Dubai

Two quotes for “the same” stone carpet can be a long way apart, and the gap is rarely profit. It is usually what is left out. Before you compare totals, put these questions to each contractor, in writing:

What is the finished thickness, and what is under it?	A garden path and a car driveway are different builds. A thin layer over an unassessed base is the cheapest quote and the commonest reason a surface fails.
Is the resin UV-stable (aliphatic), and is it made or bought in?	Outdoors, the wrong resin ambers and hazes. It looks fine on the day of handover and wrong a season later.
Is the aggregate washed and graded, and is the blend the sample you approved?	Dusty or mixed aggregate bonds badly and shows patches. Ask to see the sample from the same batch.
Who lays it, and are they the people you met?	Resin bound has a short working time in Gulf heat. It is a crew skill, not a product you can buy in a bucket.
Is mobilization, edge detailing and drainage included?	Our own price shows the one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee openly, next to the rate. If a quote hides it inside a lower rate, compare like for like.
What does the warranty actually cover?	Ours is a 5-year workmanship warranty. Ask any competitor what theirs covers and who honours it.

When we tell you not to use stone carpet

We would rather lose a job than lay a surface that fails. These are the situations where we advise against it, or change the plan:

• A base that moves. A cracked slab that is still settling, or a driveway over poorly compacted fill, will telegraph cracks through a rigid stone carpet. We would repair or rebuild the base first, and say so, instead of laying over it.
• Standing water with nowhere to go. Stone carpet is permeable, but the layer beneath must drain too. A flat, sealed slab with no fall traps water under the surface. Falls and outlets get fixed first.
• Heavy leaf litter and tree roots. Falling debris that is left to rot can clog the surface, and roots lift any paving. Regular sweeping is the only maintenance stone carpet asks for, and if that is unrealistic for the site, interlock may suit you better.
• Where grip on steps is the priority. See the stairs section below. We point you to resin bonded there.
• Areas that need to feel cool at midday. Pale blends run cooler than dark ones, but nothing outdoors in Dubai in July is cool underfoot, and we will not promise otherwise.

Where stone carpet goes: outdoor first, indoor floors second

Stone carpet is an outdoor surface first: driveways, courtyards, entrances, garden paths, terraces, pool surrounds and podium decks, anywhere a seamless surface that drains itself is wanted. The build-up follows the job. A garden path or courtyard is laid in the lighter foot-traffic build; a car driveway is laid thicker, on a properly prepared base, to carry vehicle weight (for the vehicle build-up in detail, see resin bound driveways in Dubai). Indoors it is laid as a thinner stone carpet flooring system, and that is where honesty about rooms matters, so here it is, room by room.

Does stone carpet (resin bound gravel) work as a wall covering?

We do not recommend it, and we do not apply it. Resin bound is trowelled flat under its own weight; on a vertical surface the aggregate slumps and the finish ends up thin, patchy and impossible to keep clean, so the “gravel wall” panels sold for feature walls are a different, pre-cast product rather than a trowelled stone carpet. If you want a seamless mineral texture on a wall that matches a stone carpet floor, microcement is the honest answer — it is made for walls, comes in the same warm neutrals, and runs seamlessly into showers and around corners where resin bound cannot.

Stone carpet on a bathroom or kitchen floor?

Sometimes — but usually we will steer you elsewhere. Indoors, stone carpet is laid as the thinner interior system and works well as a feature floor in a dry area: a lobby, a balcony, a covered terrace, a hallway. In a kitchen the open texture holds grease and crumbs, and in a wet bathroom the pores that make it drain outdoors become pores that hold water indoors unless the surface is fully sealed. Stone carpet for stairs and outdoor steps

Wide, shallow exterior steps and landings can be finished in stone carpet to run continuously from a path or pool deck, and it looks very good done that way. On a real staircase, and on any step that gets wet, grip matters more than a seamless look, so we recommend resin bonded — the same stone scattered onto a resin film, with every stone tip standing proud — or, indoors, microcement with a nosing detail.
