The honest answer up front: microcement itself does not crack — but it is a thin coating bonded to whatever sits beneath it, and if that substrate moves, the movement telegraphs through as a crack in the surface. A 2–3mm mineral layer cannot restrain a moving slab, an open joint, or a flexing board; nothing that thin can. Which means the real question is never “does the material crack?” — it is “was the substrate assessed, prepared and reinforced by someone who knew what they were looking at?” On a properly prepared base with mesh in the build-up, a microcement surface stays sound for many years. On a skipped-prep job it can crack in months. The material is not the risk; the preparation is.
Why the coating gets blamed for the substrate
Microcement is a finish, not a structure. It is applied in thin coats over concrete, screed, plasterboard, blockwork — even directly over existing tiles — and it bonds tightly to all of them. That tight bond is its strength and its honesty: whatever the substrate does, the coating reports. A shrinkage crack opening in a young screed, a movement joint that was coated straight over, a plasterboard junction that flexes when a door slams — each one prints through the coating as a line, and the coating takes the blame for the substrate’s behaviour.

What a proper installation does about it
The reason a professional microcement job costs more than a bucket of material is that most of the work happens before the finish coats — and it is exactly the work that decides the cracking question.
Assessment first. Is the screed cured and dry, or still shrinking? Are there existing cracks, and are they dormant or live? Where are the movement joints? A new screed needs its full cure before coating — rushing this is the single most common cause of early cracking.
Crack treatment. Existing cracks are opened, filled and bridged before anything else happens — not coated over and hoped about.
Mesh in the build-up. A fibreglass mesh embedded in the base coats spreads stress across the surface instead of letting it concentrate along one line. It is the difference between a hairline that never appears and one that appears in the first summer. If a quote does not mention mesh, ask why.
Movement joints stay respected. Where a slab has a genuine structural or movement joint, the honest detail is to carry a neat joint through the finish — a clean line in a planned place — rather than coat across it and receive a ragged crack in an unplanned one. An installer who promises to “make the joint disappear” is promising to relocate it, jaggedly.
Hairline vs structural — what you are actually looking at
If a fine hairline does appear over the years, keep perspective: a hairline in a mineral surface is cosmetic, does not lift or spread the coating, and can be repaired — filled and blended, and in a wet zone re-sealed so water stays out of it. Repairs in a hand-applied material blend far better than a cracked tile ever can.
A structural crack is different: wider, often stepped, usually continuing through the substrate itself, and frequently mirrored elsewhere in the building. No surface finish causes that and no surface finish cures it — the slab or structure is the patient, and recoating before it is stabilised just writes the crack again. We will say so plainly on a site visit rather than sell a cosmetic fix twice.
UAE conditions, honestly
Heat itself is not the enemy — cured microcement is a mineral coating and stable through UAE summers. What the climate does do is accelerate the installer’s mistakes: fast drying stresses coats applied too thick or too quickly, and big glazing means strong thermal cycling on floors near full-sun windows, which punishes any skipped movement detail. Same rule again: climate does not crack good preparation; it exposes bad preparation sooner. It is also worth knowing the alternative trade-off — a polished concrete floor is the slab, so it carries the slab’s cracks directly; microcement over a sound, prepared slab is the more controllable finish of the two.
The bottom line
Does microcement crack? The material, no. The system, only where the substrate moves and the preparation failed to manage it — a missing mesh, an uncured screed, a coated-over movement joint. Choose the installer for their questions about your floor, not their promises about their product: the ones who talk about cure times, mesh and joints are the ones whose floors stay quiet.
