Yes — microcement can be applied directly over existing tiles, and renovating without demolition is one of the main reasons people choose it. The honest condition attached: it works over sound, well-bonded tiles only. Microcement is 2–3mm thin, and it takes the shape and the movement of whatever it covers — so the real question is never “can microcement go over tiles” but “are these particular tiles a stable base”. That is decided by a few checks that take minutes, and skipping them is where the horror stories come from.
Why going over tiles is worth it
Ripping out a tiled floor or bathroom is the single most disruptive part of a renovation: days of jackhammering, skips of rubble, dust through the house, and in an apartment building, neighbours and management to appease. Going over the tiles removes all of it. There is a second, less obvious win: height. A microcement build-up adds about 3mm, where new tiles over screed add several centimetres — so doors still open, thresholds still line up, and sanitaryware stays where it is. For an occupied villa or a hotel room that cannot close for three weeks, that is often the whole decision. The checks that decide it
Tap the tiles. A well-bonded tile sounds solid; a debonded one sounds hollow. A few hollow tiles are normal and get re-fixed or filled before coating. A floor that sounds hollow across whole areas is telling you the tile bed itself has failed — coating over it would mean building a new finish on a base that is already letting go.
Look for movement, not just cracks. A hairline in one tile is cosmetic. A crack that runs in a line across several tiles is the substrate moving underneath — and a 2–3mm coating will not hold together what a 10mm tile could not. That crack has to be treated as a structural question first, exactly as we explain for lime finishes in does lime plaster crack — the finish is never the fix for a moving base.
Wet areas need one honest extra question: what is under the tiles? In a shower or bathroom floor, waterproofing lives underneath the finish — that is the whole system logic we cover in is microcement waterproof. If the existing tiled shower never leaked, the membrane below is doing its job and the new system goes over the top with its own wet-zone build-up. If the room has a history of leaks, coating over it hides the evidence without curing the patient — that is a case for opening up, and we will say so.
How the system is actually built
Over tiles that pass the checks, the build-up matters more than the material: the glaze is mechanically keyed (ground) so the base coat can grip; hollow or loose tiles are re-fixed; grout lines are filled by the base coats over a mesh so their grid cannot ghost through the finish; then the microcement layers and sealer go on as on any floor. Done properly, nobody standing in the finished room can tell there were ever tiles under it. Done cheaply — no grinding, no mesh, one heavy coat — the grout grid reappears as shadow lines within months. If a quote for going over tiles is dramatically cheaper than everyone else’s, that missing preparation is usually where the savings came from.
Walls take the same logic with an easier job — wall tiles carry no traffic, so a tiled kitchen splashback or bathroom wall is one of the safest over-tile applications there is.
When we would say no
- Hollow-sounding areas everywhere — the tile bed is failing; coating it inherits the failure.
- Active substrate movement — a live structural crack line needs an engineer’s answer, not a finish.
- A leaking wet room — fix the waterproofing first; never seal the evidence in.
- Outdoor tiled areas in full sun — thermal cycling over a tiled base outdoors is a harder ask; for exteriors we would steer you to resin-bound stone carpet instead.
None of these mean “microcement is wrong” — they mean the base is not ready. The difference between the two is the site visit.
