Microcement Walls: The Finish, the Texture and Where It Belongs

Microcement walls start from AED 220/m²

Supply and installation. Exact quotes follow a site visit; bespoke work is priced on consultation.

A microcement wall is a 2–3mm hand-trowelled mineral coating with the colour mixed through it, sealed to a matte or satin finish — not a paint, not a plaster in the lime sense, and not a tile — and it starts from AED 220 per square metre supplied and installed. It belongs on feature walls, in bathrooms and kitchens, and anywhere a wall is meant to continue into a floor, a ceiling or a shower as one surface. It does not belong on a wall that only needs colour; there, paint wins on price and we say so. This guide covers the finish, the texture, the comparison with paint and the honest room list. It applies equally to what the UAE market calls micro cement walls, microtopping walls and micro concrete walls — one material, several names.

The microcement wall finish: what you actually see

A microcement wall finish reads as soft, clouded mineral colour with a faint memory of the trowel — closer to a smooth concrete or a fine stone than to a painted surface. The colour is pigment blended into the coating and built up in two finish coats, so it varies gently across the wall rather than sitting as one flat tone; the sealer then deepens it and sets the sheen, from a chalky matte to a low satin. Up close there are no joints, no grout and no roller texture. In UAE light, particularly a west-facing wall in the afternoon, expect the tone to read lighter and warmer than the sample board did indoors — which is why we sample on your wall, not in the showroom (how microcement colours behave).

Wall paint vs microcement: is microcement a paint?

No — and the difference is the whole reason it costs more. Paint is a film a fraction of a millimetre thick applied by roller or brush; microcement is a trowelled cement coating two to three millimetres thick, cured coat by coat, sanded and sealed, with the colour in the material rather than on it. Paint chips down to the wall beneath; microcement wears through the sealer to more of the same colour. Paint is repainted in a day; a microcement wall takes four to seven days of coats and cure time. “Microcement wall paint” and “microcement paint” are not products — what is sold under those names is usually a textured effect paint or a concrete-look emulsion, which gives a hint of the look at a paint price and a paint lifespan, and is honestly the right buy for a rented apartment or a low-traffic wall. If you want the mineral depth, the seamless corner into a floor or shower, and a surface that survives a bathroom, that is what microcement is for. From AED 220/m², microcement costs several times what good emulsion costs; on a wall that only needs colour, choose the emulsion.

If the wall only needs colour, hire a painter. For a lime wall see Venetian plaster in Dubai; for a continuous wall-to-floor surface see microcement in Dubai.

Microtopping (micro concrete) walls: the same wall finish

Microtopping walls, micro topping walls and micro concrete walls are microcement walls: the same 2–3mm coating, the same coats, the same sealer and the same rate from AED 220/m². The names come from different suppliers and different countries, not from different products, and our what is microtopping explainer walks through them. The only case where the word means something different is a supplier using “micro concrete” for a thick, poured or sprayed structural mix — that is not a wall finish at all, and a wall quote using it should be questioned.

Microtopping wall texture: from near-smooth to visible trowel grain

The texture of a microcement or microtopping wall is a choice made at application, not a property of the product. Two smooth finish coats, well sanded, give a near-flat surface with only the cloudiness of the colour showing; a coarser finish coat or a lighter sanding leaves a visible trowel grain that reads more like raw concrete. Bathrooms and kitchen walls usually want the smoother end, because a smooth sealed wall wipes cleaner; a living-room feature wall or a majlis can carry more grain. Whichever you pick, the texture is made by hand in the finish coats, which is why two crews working from the same bucket produce two different walls — and why the sample we make on your wall is made by the applicator who will do the job.

Where microcement walls belong — and where paint wins

Bathroom walls — the best case. No grout, no mould lines, and the wall runs into the floor and the shower as one surface; walls from AED 220/m², with the shower zone itself tanked and sealed for immersion from AED 350/m² (microcement bathrooms). Kitchen walls and splashbacks — seamless, grease-proof, wipeable; we coat the walls and splashback, never the worktop itself. Feature walls — a fireplace wall, a TV wall, a majlis wall, a hotel corridor: the depth and the absence of joints are what you are paying for. Staircase walls — where the floor finish climbs the wall alongside the stairs, so the whole route reads as one object. Where paint wins: any plain wall that only needs a colour, ceilings, and rented apartments where you will not get the cost back. Where lime wins: a client who wants breathability and the polished-marble depth of a Venetian finish is asking for a different material, and we send them to Venetian plaster in Dubai instead.

What microcement walls cost, and how the work runs

Microcement walls start from AED 220 per square metre, supply and install, anywhere in the UAE; a 12m² feature wall therefore starts from around AED 2,640 (12 × 220). Bathroom and kitchen walls are priced as walls; only the wet zone of a shower moves to the wet-zone rate. The work runs as primer, mesh where the substrate needs it, two base coats and two coloured finish coats, sanded between, then sealer — four to seven days including cure time, during which the room stays out of use. Plasterboard, blockwork and old tiled walls are all suitable once tested and primed; a freshly plastered wall needs to dry fully first. The full price logic is in the microcement cost guide, and a site visit and a sample on your own wall start at microcement in Dubai or microcement in Abu Dhabi.

Microcement walls: common questions

How much do microcement walls cost in Dubai and the UAE? Microcement walls start from AED 220 per square metre, supply and installation, the same rate in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates. A shower wet zone is priced separately, from AED 350/m². The quote after the site visit can be higher if the wall needs repair first.

Can microcement go on bathroom walls and shower walls? Yes. Bathroom walls are the best case, and the shower zone is tanked and sealed for immersion as its own step (microcement bathrooms in Dubai).

Can microcement go over existing tiles? Over sound, well-bonded tiles it can, after testing and priming; loose or hollow tiles come off first. We check this on site rather than promise it from a photo.

Is a microcement wall waterproof? The sealed surface sheds water, and wet zones get a proper waterproofing layer beneath it. The finish alone is not the waterproofing.

How long does a microcement wall last, and can it be repaired? A sealed wall in normal home use lasts for years with ordinary cleaning. A knock is patched, but a patch is visible up close because the hand-trowelled cloud cannot be matched perfectly.

Is microcement a good choice for a feature wall, a TV wall or a fireplace wall? Yes: the absence of joints and the mineral depth are what you are paying for. For a plain wall that only needs colour, paint is the better buy.

Is a micro cement wall the same as a microcement wall? Yes. Micro cement, microcement, microtopping and micro concrete are names for the same 2–3mm hand-trowelled coating, so the wall finish, the texture choices, the rooms it suits and the rate (from AED 220/m², supply and install) are identical whichever spelling a quote uses. If two quotes use different names, compare the number of coats, the sealer and who applies it, not the name. What is micro cement for walls, and what does a microtopping wall finish look like? Micro cement for walls is the same thin cement-based coating used on floors, made smooth enough to trowel onto a vertical surface: primer, two base coats and two coloured finish coats, about 2–3mm in total, then a sealer. A microtopping wall finish is that result under another name — soft, clouded mineral colour with a faint trowel movement, from near-smooth to visible grain, in a matte or satin sheen. It goes over plaster, sound tiles and plasterboard after the right preparation.

Is there such a thing as microcement paint? Not as the real finish. “Microcement paint” and “micro cement wall paint” are searches for a microcement look on a wall, and the answer is a trowelled 2–3mm coating, not a paint: primer, two base coats and two coloured finish coats, sanded and sealed, from AED 220/m². A tin of paint sold as a microcement effect is still a thin film, so it will not have the depth or the joint-free run into a floor. If you only want colour on a plain wall, paint is the honest buy (see “Wall paint vs microcement” above).
