Microtopping is the same material as microcement — a thin, polymer-modified cement coating, about 2–3mm thick, trowelled by hand over an existing floor or wall and sealed. It is a decorative finish, not a poured concrete. “Micro cement,” “micro concrete” (also written “microconcrete”) and “microtopping” are not three different products; they are three names the same UAE market uses for one thing, picked up from different suppliers, different countries and different marketing departments. If you have seen all four terms and wondered which one to search for, search for any of them — you will land on the same surface, and RBS applies it in the UAE from AED 220 per square metre on walls and from AED 250 per square metre on floors. In plain terms, microtopping in the UAE costs what microcement costs: walls from AED 220/m² and floors from AED 250/m², supplied and installed, with the final quote after a site visit.
What is microtopping?
Microtopping is a thin cementitious coating — typically 2–3mm total build across a base coat and a topcoat — applied by hand over an existing floor or wall to create a smooth, seamless, jointless surface. It is a coating, not a poured slab: it goes over what is already there (tiles, screed, old concrete) rather than replacing it, which is why a full room can be resurfaced without demolition. The name “microtopping” describes exactly what it is: a micro-thin topping applied over a substrate.
Is microtopping the same as microcement?
Yes. Microtopping and microcement describe the identical system — a base coat for strength and adhesion, a decorative topcoat for colour and texture, and a sealer to close and protect it. The word “microcement” is more common in Spain and the wider European market that popularised the finish; “microtopping” is the name several international suppliers and franchises use for the same product line. Neither name refers to a different formulation, thickness or application method. RBS uses “microcement” as our primary term because it is the clearer, more literal description in English, but we answer to microtopping just the same.
What about micro cement and micro concrete?
“Micro cement” (two words) is simply an alternative spelling of microcement, used interchangeably by UAE searchers and several suppliers. “Micro concrete” is a looser, sometimes inaccurate label — the material is a cement-based coating, not a poured concrete, but it gets called “micro concrete” often enough in the UAE market that we treat it as another name for the same finish rather than a genuinely separate product. If a supplier’s “micro concrete” is being poured in centimetres rather than trowelled in millimetres, ask what you are actually buying — that would be a different, thicker system (closer to a micro-screed), not what most UAE searchers mean by the term.
Micro concrete vs normal concrete
Normal concrete is a structural, poured material — centimetres to metres thick, mixed with aggregate, and cured over days. What UAE suppliers call “micro concrete” in a decorative-finishes context is nothing like that: it is a thin, hand-trowelled cement coating measured in millimetres, applied as a surface finish over an existing floor or wall, not a structural pour. The shared word “concrete” causes the confusion, but the product, the thickness, the tools and the trade are entirely different from structural concrete work.
What actually differs between microtopping systems and materials
The name on the bag matters less than the system behind it. Two things genuinely separate one microtopping/microcement product from another:
- The system itself — a matched base coat, topcoat and sealer designed to work together, versus a mismatched combination that risks poor adhesion or premature wear. RBS applies its own Micro-C, a professional Italian microcement system finished by our own trained crews.
- The installer’s skill — because the coating is only millimetres thick and hand-trowelled, the finish depends entirely on the hands laying it. The same system installed by two different crews can look and wear differently.
Thickness, sealer grade and colour range are set by the chosen system, not by whether the supplier calls it microtopping, micro cement or microcement.
Microtopping flooring material in the UAE: the grey concrete-look floor
Microtopping flooring in the UAE is a 2–3mm coloured cement coating over an existing floor, and the classic version of it is the grey, concrete-look floor — the finish most people picture when they search for micro concrete. The material is the microcement system described above; grey is only the most-asked-for colour, and the same coating comes in warm neutrals, sand tones and deep charcoals. A microtopping concrete floor does not need a concrete slab underneath: it goes over tiles, screed or old terrazzo just as well, which is where it earns its place in renovations. Floors take the floor-grade base coat and a wear-grade sealer, and start from AED 250 per square metre supplied and installed.
Microtopping in the kitchen, living room and bathroom
The living room is where microtopping flooring is most often laid — one uninterrupted grey or neutral plane from the entrance to the terrace doors. The kitchen takes the same floor plus a seamless splashback, with the honest rule that acidic spills get wiped promptly, because the sealer is the part that marks — and the worktop itself stays a stone, quartz or porcelain slab, because we coat floors, walls and ceilings only. The bathroom is the one room where the name matters least and the build-up matters most: a microtopping bathroom is a microcement bathroom, and it needs a tanking membrane underneath and an immersion-grade sealer on top or it will fail regardless of what it was called on the quote. Details for each room are on microcement in Dubai and microcement bathrooms.
Microtopping questions, answered
Is microtopping the same as microcement? Yes — one coating, two names. See the answer near the top of this page.
Is microtopping waterproof? The coating itself is not a waterproofing layer. In a bathroom or shower it is laid over a tanking membrane and finished with an immersion-grade sealer; the waterproofing comes from that build-up, not from the name.
Can microtopping go on walls as well as floors? Yes. Walls start from AED 220 per square metre supplied and installed, floors from AED 250. For walls, see microcement walls in the UAE.
Can microtopping be used outdoors? Only in the outdoor-rated colours, on terraces, balconies and outside walls with normal foot traffic — not on driveways or for cars. Indoor-only colours must stay indoors.
Is microtopping suitable for heavy-use floors? No. Like all microcement it is for homes and normal-use rooms, not busy commercial floors, garages or workshops.
Is microconcrete the same as microtopping? Yes. “Microconcrete”, “micro concrete” and “microtopping” all describe the same hand-trowelled decorative cement coating in the UAE market. The one exception is a thicker, poured cement mix that some suppliers also sell as micro concrete, laid in centimetres rather than millimetres — that is a construction product, not a decorative floor or wall finish, so ask which one a quote means.
Is “micro topping” (two words) something different? No. Micro topping, microtopping and micro-topping are spellings of the same name; all of them mean the hand-trowelled microcement coating described on this page.
Is microtopping the same as a cementitious overlay? No. Microtopping is the 2–3mm decorative microcement skin; a cementitious overlay is a thicker levelling layer that makes a tired slab flat and sound, and microtopping very often goes on top of it. The two are stages of one job more often than rivals — the full comparison is in cementitious overlay vs microcement.
Is microtopping cheaper than microcement? Not when it is the same system — and it is. A quote that is much lower than microcement rates is usually a bare grey cementitious overlay without the colour work and decorative sealer; microcement pros and cons explains why that product wears differently.
Can microtopping be used in a kitchen? Yes — on the kitchen floor, walls and splashback, not on the worktop. The care rules are the same as any microcement kitchen: wipe acidic spills promptly and clean with pH-neutral products; see microcement in the kitchen.
How thick is microtopping? About 2–3mm in total across the base and finish coats — which is why it goes over existing tiles without lifting door thresholds.
Can microtopping go over a concrete floor? Yes — a microtopping concrete floor is one of its most common uses. The coating goes over a sound, dry concrete slab or screed once it has been prepared and primed. Because it is only 2–3mm thick, cracks or movement in the concrete show through, so cracks are repaired first, and a slab that is still moving is not a base for it.
How much does microtopping cost in Dubai? The same as microcement: from AED 220 per square metre on walls, from AED 250 on floors and from AED 350 in wet zones, supplied and installed. The name on the quote does not change the rate; the microcement cost guide explains what moves it.
What is microtopping flooring, and who installs it in Dubai and the UAE? Microtopping flooring is the 2–3mm microcement coating laid over an existing floor, sealed and left seamless. RBS applies it across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the rest of the UAE, for homes and normal-use rooms only. Start with microtopping in Dubai and send a photo of the floor on WhatsApp.
Does RBS install microtopping in Dubai and Abu Dhabi? Yes — our own trained crews apply it across the UAE. Start with microtopping in Dubai or microcement in Abu Dhabi.
How does microtopping compare with tiles or polished concrete? It is seamless and goes over what is already there; see microcement vs tiles and polished concrete vs microcement.
