Microcement Colours: What to Expect Before You Choose

Before you fall for a colour card, understand what you are actually choosing: microcement colour is mineral pigment blended through a cement coating and hand-trowelled — so the finished surface is never one flat tone but a soft, clouded drift of the tone, and the sealer then shifts it again, deepening it and setting its sheen. The cloudiness is not a defect; it is the entire point of the material. If you want a perfectly uniform colour, microcement is the wrong product and we will say so on the first call. Where the colour lives

Microcement is coloured by mixing mineral pigment into the coating itself, then building the surface in thin trowelled coats. Two consequences follow. First, the colour is in the material, not painted on — wear does not reveal a different colour underneath. Second, every pass of the trowel lays pigment at slightly different pressure and direction, which is what produces the gentle mottling — the “clouds” — that make a microcement floor read as mineral rather than plastic. Two installers, same bucket, same wall: two visibly different clouds. That hand is part of what you are buying.

The sealer changes the colour — plan for it

The raw coating and the finished floor are different colours. The penetrating sealer and topcoat deepen the tone — like a stone darkening when wet, permanently — and the choice of matte, satin or gloss finish changes how the clouds show: matte softens the movement and hides marks best; satin adds life and slightly more depth; gloss saturates the colour most and shows the most texture and, honestly, the most scuffs. The same grey can read three ways under three topcoats. This is why judging microcement from an unsealed sample, or someone else’s photograph, reliably disappoints.

What UAE light does to it

Rooms here are bright, the light is warm, and glazing is generous. Pale greiges, sands and warm mid-greys — the classic microcement palette — behave beautifully in it, reading calm at noon and warm at dusk. Cool blue-greys chosen from northern-hemisphere Pinterest boards tend to drift warmer here than in the reference photo. Very dark floors — charcoal, near-black — are dramatic and entirely feasible, with two honest costs: they show dust and hard-water marks more readily in a dusty climate, and they absorb heat near big west-facing glazing. None of this rules anything out; it just belongs in the decision.

The rule that prevents every regret: samples on YOUR wall

We insist on this and it is not ceremony. A microcement sample must be made with the actual product and pigment, sealed with the actual topcoat you will get, and viewed in the actual room — on or beside your wall or floor, through a full day of your light. Small showroom chips lie twice: colour reads darker over a large area than on a hand sample, and your room’s light is not the showroom’s. Live with the sample through a morning and an evening before you sign off a tone. Ten minutes of patience at this stage is the entire difference between a floor you love and a floor you tolerate.

Grey is not compulsory

The stereotype is concrete-grey, and grey is popular for a reason — but the pigment system covers a broad range: warm whites and bones, sands and taupes, terracotta and earth tones, muted greens, deep charcoals. Living with it: how the colour ages

A well-installed microcement surface keeps its colour — mineral pigments are UV-stable and do not fade the way tinted paints can. What evolves is the surface above the colour: the topcoat wears with use and can be renewed, and the floor gains a lived-in patina that most owners come to prefer to day one. Clean with pH-neutral products — harsh chemicals attack the sealer, and the sealer is what keeps the colour reading rich. The bottom line

Expect a clouded, mineral, hand-made colour that the sealer deepens and your light completes — and approve it from a sealed sample in your own room, never from a card. Do that, and microcement gives you one of the most liveable coloured surfaces there is.
