Bush-Hammered Concrete vs Exposed Aggregate: Which One?

The short answer first: both finishes turn plain concrete into a stone-like, decorative surface, but they answer to different geometry — bush-hammered concrete is worked after the pour and belongs on facades, plinths, steps and vertical or upright elements, while exposed aggregate is revealed during the pour and belongs on flat, poured-at-scale hardscape like driveways and pool decks. They rarely compete for the same square metre; the question is almost always which element of the project you are finishing, not which finish looks better.

Two different processes, not two styles of the same thing

Exposed aggregate happens while the concrete is still young: the surface cement paste is held back and washed away before it fully sets, and the pebbles already inside the mix rise into view. It is a decoration that comes from the pour itself — one crew, one slab, structure and finish together. Because it needs fresh concrete, it can only go into a new pour; it cannot be added to a slab that already exists.

Bush-hammered concrete works the opposite way, and afterwards. The concrete is allowed to cure fully, hard and set, and only then is its skin struck or abraded off — with a bush hammer’s pointed teeth, a sandblaster, or a shot-blaster, depending on how much relief you want. It removes material rather than revealing it, and because the working happens after curing, it can be applied to concrete elements that were poured for other reasons and are being finished, or restored, later.

Where each one actually earns its keep

Exposed aggregate wins on flat, large-scale, structural hardscape. Driveways, pool decks, community walkways and garden paths — anywhere a slab is being poured at real scale, exposed aggregate delivers slab and finish in one operation, at a price nothing decorative beats per square metre on new work. It is naturally slip-resistant wet or dry because the grip is standing stone, and it has decades of proven service in exactly this climate of use.

Bush-hammered wins on worked, vertical, or architectural elements. Facades, boundary walls, plinths and columns, water-feature surrounds, external steps and ramps — places where the texture is meant to be seen up close and to throw shadow across the day, not walked over at scale. Raking Gulf light is generous to it in a way flat exposed aggregate rarely gets the chance to show off, because most exposed-aggregate surfaces are horizontal, underfoot, not lit from the side.

The overlap is narrow but real: external steps and water-feature surrounds. Both finishes grip wet feet without a coating, because both derive their slip resistance from fractured or standing stone rather than a topcoat. Here the honest tie-breaker is whether the element is being poured fresh (lean exposed aggregate) or is an existing/architectural piece being finished (lean bush-hammered).

What neither one is

Neither is a coating or a render, and that matters for durability and for what RBS actually does on each. Exposed aggregate’s decoration is the concrete itself, revealed; bush-hammered’s is the concrete itself, struck open. As a surface company rather than a structural contractor, our part on both is the finishing craft — aggregate selection and reveal timing on one, the choice of hone, sandblast, shot-blast or hammer relief on the other — within a wider project where the concrete pour or the base element belongs to someone else.

Neither is barefoot-soft, either. Bush-hammered, at its coarsest relief, is deliberately unforgiving — it is chosen for shadow and grip, not comfort.

And if the concrete is already there

Exposed aggregate genuinely cannot be added after the fact — it has to be in the original pour. The verdict

Pouring a new driveway, pool deck or large hardscape area from scratch: exposed aggregate, proven, economical at scale, and naturally grippy. Finishing a facade, plinth, water feature or a set of external steps that wants shadow and worked-stone character: bush-hammered. Wanting the exposed-aggregate brief without the joints, the roughness or the impermeability: look at resin-bound instead.
