What it is

Resin bound gravel is natural stone fully coated in clear resin and hand-trowelled into one seamless, permeable surface — in Dubai and across the UAE it is laid on driveways, garden paths, courtyards, terraces and pool surrounds. Resin-bound is a seamless stone carpet. Natural aggregate — fine gravel, quartz, sometimes marble or recycled glass — is fully coated in a clear resin and hand-trowelled onto a prepared base. Every stone is locked in place, yet the tiny voids between them stay open, so water drains straight through and puddles never form. The result is smooth underfoot, quietly beautiful, and completely jointless.

Where it comes from

It grew out of European landscaping, valued for being permeable and kind to tree roots and drainage. RBS was born on this surface — it is where the name began — and we still produce our own resin-bound in-house. What is resin bound gravel, and what is a resin bound driveway?

Resin bound gravel is natural stone — washed, kiln-dried and graded to a few millimetres — mixed with a clear, UV-stable resin until every stone is coated, then hand-trowelled onto a prepared base so the stones lock together while the voids between them stay open. That is the whole product: no dye, no cement, no joints. A resin bound driveway is the same material laid thicker — 15–18mm on a base built to carry a car — instead of the 6–10mm build used for paths, courtyards and interior floors. The thickness and the base are the difference between a driveway that lasts and one that sheds stones; the stone and resin are the same. How much does resin bound gravel cost in the UAE?

Resin bound gravel starts from AED 170 per square metre, plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project, so a 40 m² area starts from AED 10,300 (40 × 170 + 3,500). It is a starting price, not a fixed one: the quote after the site visit can be higher, because the base, the thickness and the aggregate you choose all move it. Resin flooring meaning: where stone carpet sits in the resin family

“Resin flooring” means any floor whose binder is a synthetic resin rather than cement or lime, so it is a family name, not a product: epoxy, polyurethane, MMA and resin bound stone are all resin floors, and they behave very differently. Resin bound is the open, permeable, outdoor member; epoxy and polyurethane are sealed, continuous indoor coatings; MMA is a fast-curing indoor system for facilities that cannot close. When someone in the UAE asks for “resin flooring” for a driveway or pool surround they mean this page; for a garage, showroom or studio they usually mean epoxy. Resin bound aggregate and materials: what goes into the mix

Two materials, and the quality of both decides everything. The aggregate is genuine quarried stone — marble, granite or quartz chippings, sometimes recycled glass — washed and kiln-dried so no moisture or dust interferes with the bond, and graded to a consistent size so the trowelled surface reads as one texture. The binder is a clear two-part resin; for the UAE it must be a UV-stable aliphatic grade, because the cheaper aromatic resins amber and haze within a couple of summers of direct sun. We do not sell either material separately: the mix ratio, the working time and the base preparation are the craft, and a kit removes all three.

Resin bound gravel installation guide: the professional procedure

A professional resin bound installation runs in this order, and every step matters. First the base is assessed: existing concrete or asphalt is checked for soundness, cracks and falls and repaired; a new area gets a compacted, load-bearing sub-base. Second, edges are fixed — kerbs, thresholds, drainage channels — because the mix needs a firm edge to trowel against. Third, the surface is primed where the substrate calls for it. Fourth, the aggregate and resin are mixed in measured batches in a forced-action mixer, never by hand, and laid immediately: the working time is short and Gulf heat shortens it further, which is why summer work is best started early in the day. Fifth, the mix is hand-trowelled to an even depth in one continuous pass, with no cold joints. Finally it cures before use; we give the exact window for the season and the build. Room by room: where it belongs, and where it does not

Outdoors first: driveways, courtyards, entrances, garden paths, terraces, pool surrounds and podium decks are where resin bound is the right answer, because the permeability, the seamless surface and the UV-stable resin are all doing real work there. Indoors, the thinner stone carpet system works as a feature floor in dry areas — a lobby, a hallway, a covered balcony. It is the wrong choice on walls (it slumps; use microcement — see can resin bound go on walls? for the full reasoning), in kitchens (the open texture holds grease), in wet bathrooms unless fully sealed (the pores hold water — see stone carpet in bathrooms), and on steep steps or ramps, where resin bonded gives the grip a smooth surface cannot.
