Exposed Aggregate Concrete

What it is

Exposed aggregate concrete is freshly poured concrete whose thin surface layer of cement paste is washed away while it is still young, so the stones inside the mix show at the surface — a grippy, hard-wearing finish for driveways, pool decks, paths and large outdoor areas. Exposed aggregate — washed concrete — is decorative concrete at its most direct. Every slab is full of stone; this finish simply shows it. While the concrete is still young, the thin skin of cement paste at the surface is held back from setting and then washed away, and the pebbles inside come up into the light: rounded gravels, crushed granites, warm desert tones or cool greys, whatever blend the mix was built around. The decoration is not applied to the slab — it is the slab, revealed.

One thing we should be clear about, because it decides how a project is organised: RBS is a surface company, not a structural contractor. We do not pour slabs. Where exposed aggregate appears in our work, our part is the decorative side of the concrete package — the aggregate selection, the surface reveal and the sealing — carried out within a wider project where the structural pour is the concrete contractor’s.

Exposed aggregate gives you slab and finish in one pour — proven for decades, structurally straightforward, and cheaper at scale on new hardscape. Resin-bound is the more refined surface: seamless with no joints, smooth and comfortable barefoot, and permeable, so rain drains through instead of pooling. But it needs an existing sound base to sit on. So the site usually decides. Where it comes from

Washing concrete back to its stone is over a century old, and it spread for the least romantic of reasons: it worked. Mid-century suburbs across America and Australia paved their driveways, patios and civic plazas in it because one crew, one pour and one material delivered structure, texture and grip together — and those surfaces are still underfoot today, which is the durability argument made in the plainest way possible.

In the UAE the same logic holds. Villa communities pour kilometres of driveway and pool surround, the sun is merciless on coatings but indifferent to stone, and a textured surface that grips wet feet earns its keep around every pool. Lighter aggregates in an open texture also stay kinder to bare feet than dark, dense paving under summer sun.
