Decking in Dubai: Wood, WPC or a Seamless Outdoor Floor?

Decking in Dubai works best where it is shaded, raised and easy to lift — a covered terrace, a roof terrace over a waterproofing membrane, a platform over uneven ground. In full UAE sun it has two honest problems. Wooden decking turns silver-grey, dries out and needs oiling to stay smooth; WPC (composite) decking needs no oil but gets very hot underfoot, most of all in dark colours. Both are boards on a frame, so sand and leaves collect in the gaps and underneath. Where the area is open to the sun, sits on a sound slab and must be walked barefoot — a pool surround, a garden path, a villa terrace — a seamless surface usually lasts better: resin bound stone, poured rubber, or microcement in its outdoor-rated colours on a covered terrace or balcony.

We should say plainly what we do and do not do. RBS does not supply or install decking — wood, WPC or composite. We lay seamless surfaces: stone carpet in Dubai, poured rubber flooring and microcement. This guide compares all of them honestly, because on some terraces decking is the right answer and we would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong floor.

Wooden decking in Dubai: what to expect

Wooden decking gives the warmest look of any outdoor floor, and it asks the most of you in the UAE. Hardwoods such as teak, ipe and balau are chosen because they resist rot and insects better than softwood, but every timber deck in the Gulf goes through the same three changes:

  • It greys. UV bleaches the surface to silver within the first seasons. Some owners like that; if you want to keep the honey colour, the deck needs cleaning and re-oiling on a regular cycle — in full sun, more often than the label on the tin suggests.
  • It dries and checks. Long, hot, dry months open small cracks along the grain. Checked boards can lift splinters, which matters on a deck walked barefoot around a pool.
  • It moves. Timber swells and shrinks with heat and humidity, so boards are laid with gaps and fixed to a frame of joists. Over time screws need checking and the odd board needs replacing.

Timber that sits close to soil should also be checked for termites, and the frame under the boards matters as much as the boards themselves. A wooden deck that is oiled, kept clean and partly shaded can look beautiful for many years. A wooden deck in full sun that nobody maintains will look tired quickly.

WPC decking vs wood decking

WPC (wood-plastic composite) decking swaps the oiling for heat: it does not need oil and does not splinter, but in direct summer sun it gets hotter underfoot than timber. WPC boards are made of wood fibre and plastic, often with a protective outer cap. In the UAE that gives them real advantages and one large drawback.

What WPC does better than wood:

  • No oiling or staining. A wash is the main maintenance.
  • No splinters and no checking along the grain.
  • Consistent colour and boards — useful on a large rooftop or a balcony where a uniform look matters.

What to watch in UAE conditions:

  • Heat. Composite boards hold heat; dark greys and browns in afternoon sun can be too hot for bare feet. If you choose WPC for a sunny spot, choose a light colour, add shade, or both.
  • Expansion. Composite expands and contracts with temperature, so the gaps and fixings must be designed for UAE swings. A deck laid tight in winter can buckle in August.
  • Fading and scratching. Uncapped boards fade more; furniture dragged across any board leaves marks.
  • Sand in the gaps. The same as timber: sand blows into the gaps and under the deck, and it does not come out with a mop.

Search for “WPC decking” and you will find it sold as maintenance-free. Low-maintenance is closer to the truth: less work than wood, still a wash, still the gaps, and still the heat.

Where decking is the right choice

Decking is the better choice where the floor has to be raised, removable or laid without touching the slab. Be honest with yourself about these, because no seamless surface beats decking in them:

  • Roof terraces over a waterproofing membrane. A deck on pedestals sits above the membrane, lets water run underneath and can be lifted to reach the drains. A surface bonded to the slab is a different decision that needs the membrane checked first — ask before choosing it.
  • Uneven ground or a change in level. A deck frame can build a flat platform over a slope or step a garden up to the house without pouring a new slab.
  • Rented homes. A modular deck can leave with you; a bonded floor stays.
  • The look of wood. If the warmth of timber is the point, nothing seamless will replace it — and we will not pretend otherwise.

Decking vs seamless floors around a pool

Around an open pool in the UAE, a seamless surface usually beats decking: no gaps to trap sand, no boards to heat up, and no oiling. A pool deck lives a hard life — wet feet, sunscreen, chlorinated splash and full sun for most of the day. The test we use is simple: can you cross it barefoot, wet, at 3pm in August? We wrote it up in full in pool deck materials for the UAE.

  • Resin bound stone is our first answer for most open villa pools. The rounded stone gives grip under wet feet, the surface is permeable so splash drains through, and pale blends stay far more comfortable than dark boards. It starts from AED 170/m², plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project — a 30 m² pool surround starts from around AED 8,600. See is resin bound right for your pool surround.
  • Poured rubber is the softer answer for a family pool, a kids’ pool apron or a play corner beside the water. It drains rather than seals, it is kind to falls, and it is priced per project after a site visit. Its honest limits: bright colours fade in UAE sun and dark rubber gets hot.
  • Microcement belongs around a pool only under a roof or in shade, in the outdoor-rated colours, with a textured finish for grip and the full wet-zone system — from AED 350/m². On an open, sun-baked apron, choose resin bound instead.

Gloss epoxy has no place on any of these decks: it ambers in UV and turns slippery when wet. We decline that work.

Decking alternatives for a balcony or terrace

On a balcony or a covered terrace, the seamless alternative to decking is usually microcement in an outdoor-rated colour; on an open villa terrace, it is usually resin bound.

Part of the microcement range is rated for outdoor as well as indoor use; the rest is indoor-only. On a balcony, a covered terrace or an outside wall with normal foot traffic, we use only the outdoor-rated colours and show you which they are on the sample. It goes over sound existing tiles at about 3 mm, so the balcony door threshold barely changes — a deck frame, by contrast, raises the floor, which matters at a sliding door. Microcement floors start from AED 250/m², so an 8 m² balcony starts from around AED 2,000. Its honest limits: the sealer works harder in the sun and wants renewing more often outside than inside, and microcement is never for driveways, cars or heavy use.

On an open terrace or courtyard at ground level, stone carpet in Dubai is the more forgiving surface: permeable, UV-stable and comfortable underfoot in a pale blend. For more terrace options, read what to put on a UAE courtyard or terrace.

What does decking cost compared with the alternatives?

We cannot give you an honest decking price, because we do not supply or install it — ask two or three decking specialists for a written quote that includes the frame, not just the boards. The frame, the fixings and what sits under them are where cheap decks fail first.

For the surfaces we lay: resin bound starts from AED 170/m², plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project, and the quote after the site visit can be higher where the base needs work. Microcement floors start from AED 250/m² (wet zones such as pool edges from AED 350/m²), with no mobilization fee. Poured rubber is priced per project after a site visit, because the cushioning depth set by any play equipment drives the cost. When you compare, compare the whole life: a deck’s oiling, board replacement and frame checks against a seamless floor’s washing and sealer renewal.

Which one should you choose?

  • You love the look of wood, and the area is shaded or covered: wooden decking — and budget for the oiling.
  • Roof terrace over a membrane, or a platform over uneven ground: decking on a frame or pedestals, in a light WPC colour if the sun reaches it.
  • Open villa pool deck, garden path or sunny terrace walked barefoot: resin bound stone in a pale blend.
  • Children play there, or it is a kids’ pool apron: poured rubber, with the calmer colours where the sun and wear will be.
  • Balcony or covered terrace where you want one seamless surface from inside to out: microcement in an outdoor-rated colour, over the existing tiles if they are sound.

Send a photo of the terrace, balcony or pool area and its size on WhatsApp, or call +971 4 587 7086. After 8+ years of UAE summers, with crews trained in-house, we will tell you honestly whether it wants a seamless floor from us — or a deck from someone else.

FAQ

Is WPC decking good for Dubai heat?

It copes with the heat structurally if the gaps and fixings allow for expansion, but it gets very hot underfoot in direct summer sun, especially in dark colours. Choose a light colour, add shade, or use it on a covered or roof terrace. For an open area walked barefoot, a pale resin bound surface stays more comfortable.

Is WPC decking worth it in Dubai?

On a shaded, covered or roof terrace, yes: it needs no oiling and does not grey like wood. In open, full sun it is the weaker choice, because it gets very hot underfoot and traps sand beneath the boards. Check the shade and the barefoot use before buying.

How long does wooden decking last in the UAE?

It depends on the timber, the frame and the upkeep more than on the calendar. A hardwood deck that is cleaned, re-oiled and partly shaded can last many years; one left in full sun without care greys, checks and starts to splinter much sooner. Check the frame and fixings as well as the boards.

What is the best alternative to decking around a pool?

For an open villa pool in the UAE, resin bound stone in a pale blend: it grips wet feet, drains through and has no boards to heat up or gaps to fill with sand. It starts from AED 170/m², plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project. For a kids’ pool apron, poured rubber is softer; under a roof, microcement in an outdoor-rated colour.

Can microcement replace decking on a balcony?

Yes, on a balcony with normal foot traffic, in one of the outdoor-rated colours only — part of the range is indoor-only. It goes over sound existing tiles at about 3 mm, so the door threshold barely changes. Floors start from AED 250/m². It is not for driveways or heavy use.

Do you install decking?

No. RBS does not supply or install wooden, WPC or composite decking. We lay seamless surfaces — resin bound stone, poured rubber and microcement. If decking is the right answer for your terrace, a decking specialist is the right company, and we will say so.

Is decking or resin bound cheaper in Dubai?

We cannot compare honestly on a decking price, because we do not sell decking — get a decking quote that includes the frame. Resin bound starts from AED 170/m², plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project, so on a small area the fee makes each square metre cost more. Compare the upkeep too: oiling and board replacement against washing a seamless surface.
