The honest answer up front: the colour in integral coloured concrete needs almost no care at all — it’s mixed through the whole slab, so there’s no film to wear, scrub off or fade unevenly. What actually needs a routine is everything else: the sealer protecting the surface, the grit that scratches a polished finish, and a settling-in period in the first year where the slab can look chalkier than it will end up.
Why the colour itself asks for so little
This is the one genuine advantage of colouring concrete through the mix rather than onto it. The technology page is direct about it: the mineral oxide pigments are UV-stable and identical at the surface and the core, so wear, chips and abrasion expose the same tone rather than a grey scar. There is no coloured layer to protect from cleaning products, no risk of scrubbing the tint away, and nothing to touch up if a corner gets scuffed. Cleaning a through-coloured floor is, colour-wise, a non-event.
What actually needs maintenance — the seal and the surface
The colour doesn’t need protecting, but the surface it sits on does, and that’s where a real routine belongs:
- Dust and grit control first. A soft-bristle broom or dust mop before anything else keeps grit from grinding into a polished or honed surface underfoot — the same rule that governs every hard floor we lay.
- A pH-neutral cleaner for the rest. Damp-mop with a neutral floor cleaner rather than anything acidic or ammonia-based. The pigment can’t be stripped, but a strong acid can still etch or dull a sealed or polished finish, and that damage is real even where the colour underneath is fine.
- Resealing on the finish’s own schedule, not the colour’s. If the slab has been ground and polished or carries a topical sealer, that sealer is the actual wear item — it needs periodic refreshing the same way polished concrete does, on a cycle driven by traffic and exposure, not by the colour fading.
The efflorescence period — chalky is not fading
The tech page flags this honestly, and it’s worth knowing before you see it: lime salts can migrate to the surface early on, especially outdoors, and leave the tone looking cloudy or chalky in the first months. This isn’t the pigment failing — it’s a mineral bloom sitting on top of it, and it washes back with time and normal weathering. Resist the urge to attack it with an acid wash to “fix” the colour; plain water and patience is the correct response, and scrubbing harder only risks marking the surface underneath.
Indoors vs outdoors
Outdoor integral-coloured concrete — driveways, courtyards, landscape walls — sees more grit, blown sand and direct sun, so sweeping and rinsing want to happen more often, and any topical sealer wears faster under UAE UV than it would indoors. Indoor floors, typically ground and polished, follow the same dust-mop-and-neutral-cleaner routine as any polished concrete floor, with resealing spaced out over years rather than months.
What cleaning can’t do — and doesn’t need to
Because the pigment is permanent, there’s no cleaning routine that restores a colour that was never chosen well in the first place, and no routine that lets you change it later — integral colour is fixed the day the concrete is poured. If a project wants organic, variegated colour that can be renewed or adjusted after the fact, that’s a different philosophy entirely; see our comparison of every way concrete takes colour for how integral pigment stacks up against a reacted stain.
The honest verdict
Caring for integral coloured concrete is mostly caring for concrete, full stop — the pigment itself is the one part of the job that genuinely takes care of itself. Keep grit off it, use a neutral cleaner, don’t panic at early chalkiness, and reseal the surface on its own schedule rather than the colour’s, and a through-coloured slab will look the way it was poured for decades.
