Concrete takes colour three fundamentally different ways, and they are not interchangeable: integral colour is pigment mixed through the whole batch, so the colour goes all the way down and can never wear off; acid stain is a chemical reaction into an existing surface, giving organic, variegated tones that are permanent but never uniform; and a coloured overlay is a new pigmented layer laid over the concrete, which gives you any colour you want because you are not colouring the slab at all — you are re-surfacing it. Which one is right depends on one question: are you pouring new concrete, or working with concrete that already exists?
The three routes, in one view
Integral colour happens at the mixer. Acid stain happens on the cured surface. An overlay replaces the surface entirely. Everything else about choosing between them follows from that.
Integral colour — through the mix, forever
Integral coloured concrete has the pigment — mineral oxides, the same family that colours brick and roof tile — blended into the wet mix before the pour. The colour is not on the concrete; it is the concrete, from the top surface to the bottom of the slab. Chip it, grind it, wear it down for twenty years: the colour underneath is the same colour.
That permanence is the whole argument. For a surface that will be mechanically worked afterwards — ground and polished, exposed, textured — integral colour is the only route where the finishing process cannot remove the colour, because there is nothing to remove it from. The honest limits: it only works on new pours (you cannot integrally colour a slab that already exists), the palette is earthy and mineral rather than vivid (oxide pigments do ochres, terracottas, greys, buffs and near-blacks beautifully; they do not do bright blue), and colour consistency between batches takes discipline at the mixer. Pricing depends on the pour and the finish over it, so it is on consultation.
Acid stain — reacted in, organic by nature
Acid-stained concrete is the route for concrete that already exists. A mild acid solution carrying metallic salts is applied to the cured surface; it reacts with the lime in the concrete and develops colour within the top of the slab — mottled ambers, tans, browns and blue-greens that look geological rather than painted, because chemically that is what they are.
Two honest things to understand before choosing it. First, the result is variegated by nature — the stain develops differently wherever the concrete’s chemistry varies, which is exactly its beauty and exactly why you cannot order a uniform colour from it. If you want an even, predictable tone, acid stain is the wrong tool and we will say so. Second, it is one-way: the reaction is permanent, and old patches, fills and contamination in the slab will read through as part of the story. On a characterful old slab that is the appeal; on a patched-up one it can be a lottery. Sealed properly it lives indoors and out. Priced on consultation, because the slab itself decides most of the work.
A coloured overlay — any colour, because it’s a new surface
The third route stops trying to colour the concrete and simply gives it a new face. A cementitious overlay is a thin, polymer-modified cement layer — pigmented to order — bonded over the existing slab. Because the colour lives in fresh material rather than in the old concrete, the palette is wide open and the finish is consistent; you also get to fix surface damage, dusting and staining in the same operation, since the old surface disappears under the new one.
The trade-off is the flip side of the first two options: an overlay is a bonded layer, so it is only as good as the preparation and the bond beneath it, and the original slab must be structurally sound. An overlay hides a tired surface; it does not repair a failed base. Priced on consultation, driven by build-up and finish.
And if the answer is no colour at all
Worth saying plainly: some of the best concrete floors in the UAE are not coloured at all. Polished concrete — the slab itself, ground and polished to a stone-like sheen — starts from AED 180/m², and its natural grey, with the aggregate ghosting through, is precisely what many people asking about “coloured concrete” actually end up wanting once they see it. Integral colour and polishing combine beautifully (the pigment survives the grinder, as above), but the honest first question is whether the concrete needs colour at all.
Which route for your project
- New pour, colour that must last forever, mineral palette → integral colour.
- Existing sound slab, organic character, you accept variegation → acid stain.
- Existing slab, specific or uniform colour, surface needs renewing anyway → a coloured overlay.
- You mostly want depth and sheen, not a hue → polished concrete, from AED 180/m².
And one steer away from all four: if the slab is cracked through, heaving or structurally failed, no colouring route fixes that — colour follows structure, never the other way round.
