Béton Ciré vs Microcement: What's Actually the Difference?

This is the most-confused pair in decorative surfaces, and the confusion is forgivable — half the industry uses the names interchangeably. The honest untangling: they are the same family — thin, seamless, trowel-applied cementitious coatings — but béton ciré (“waxed concrete”) is the French tradition finished with wax, softer in sheen and character, while microcement as we specify it is the sealed performance system: the same cementitious beauty locked under a polyurethane sealer built for hard use and wet zones. If your project includes a bathroom, a shower or a hardworking floor, you want the sealed system. If you want the softest, most matte, most touchable version of the concrete look on a gentle-use surface, the waxed tradition is the more romantic answer.

Same family — that part of the confusion is true

Both are thin cementitious coatings — a few millimetres of cement, fine aggregate, polymers and pigment, trowelled by hand over a prepared substrate, seamless and joint-free. Both deliver the same core promise: the concrete look without pouring concrete, over floors, walls, stairs, even furniture. Applied side by side and left unsealed, the two would be close cousins that only a specifier could tell apart. This is why suppliers blur the names — and why the blurring is not entirely a lie. The real difference is not the coating. It is what goes on top of it, and what that layer commits the surface to.

Wax vs sealer — where the two paths diverge

Béton ciré carries its answer in its name: waxed concrete. The traditional French finish is protected with wax, buffed to that inimitable soft lustre — warm, slightly alive, closer to a waxed lime floor than to a modern coating. The trade is the one wax always makes: it is a sacrificial, renewable layer, not an impermeable one. It wants gentle cleaning, it marks more readily, and it is renewed as part of the floor’s life. In return you get the softest, most natural expression of the concrete look that exists.

Microcement, in the modern specification we install, is finished with a penetrating sealer and a two-part polyurethane topcoat. That topcoat changes the surface’s job description: it becomes washable, stain-resistant, and — with a membrane beneath — fit for showers and full wet zones (the system logic is in is microcement waterproof). The trade runs the other way: the sealed skin is slightly less “raw” to the touch than wax, and when it eventually wears, renewal is an applicator’s job, not an afternoon’s buffing.

Which one your project wants

• Bathroom, shower, kitchen floor, anything wet or hardworking: the sealed system, without debate. Wax is not a wet-room technology, and a waxed floor under a UAE kitchen’s traffic will spend its life being renewed. Stop asking which name is correct — ask which protection your surface needs. Wet zones and hard-use floors want the sealed polyurethane system: that is microcement, walls from AED 220/m², floors from AED 250/m², wet zones from AED 350/m². Gentle-use surfaces where the soft waxed character is the point can honestly choose béton ciré and accept the wax’s care rituals as part of its charm.
