The honest short answer: Liquid Metal is a true skin of real bronze, copper or iron powder, burnished bright and optionally coaxed toward a patina — it can stop anywhere between a polished shine and a soft aged tone. Oxidation Effects starts from a coating carrying metal particles and drives it deliberately into full corrosion — real rust, real verdigris — then neutralises and seals it there. One is a metal surface you can choose to age; the other is a finish built to already be aged, on purpose, by chemistry. Both are wall-only, hand-applied, and priced per project after a site visit like every specialty finish we apply.
The mechanism is the real difference
Liquid Metal is worked like plaster — fine bronze, copper, iron or aluminium powder carried in a binder, trowelled onto the wall, then burnished until an actual metal skin comes up under the cloth. From there it can go two ways: polished to a low, liquid shine that catches the light, or left to patinate toward rust, verdigris or a darker aged bronze. The choice happens at the end, and it can be stopped at any point along that range.
Oxidation Effects skips the “which way” decision — it commits to corrosion from the start. A coating carrying real iron, copper, bronze or brass particles is laid down, then a reactive oxidising solution is worked into it, and the chemistry does what it would do to an iron gate or a copper roof over years, compressed into hours. The iron blooms into genuine rust; the copper and bronze turn to green-and-blue verdigris. It is stopped and sealed once it reaches the tone you want — but the destination is always the oxidised look, never a bright polished metal.
What that means for the finished wall
| Liquid Metal | Oxidation Effects | |
|---|---|---|
| What’s on the wall | A true burnished metal skin | A coating that has chemically corroded in place |
| Range of outcomes | Bright polish or patina — your call | Always the rust/verdigris register |
| Best for | Fireplace surrounds, sculptural columns, curved reception desks, joinery | Feature/accent walls, bar fronts, industrial-leaning columns, doors |
| Character | Cool, dense, unmistakably metal even when polished | Real oxide texture and colour depth, never flat |
| Substrate reach | Wraps curves and edges a metalworker could never fold | Wraps any form a coating can reach |
Both are handmade and both carry genuine variance panel to panel — the reaction and the burnish are guided, not printed, so no two walls read identically. Neither belongs on a floor or in a wet zone; both are interior feature surfaces, kept to walls, columns, joinery and sculptural forms.
Which one, in practice
Choose Liquid Metal when the brief wants the option open — a surface that might stay a bright, burnished bronze or copper shine, or might later be coaxed toward a patina, and especially when the form itself is sculptural: a curved column, a fireplace hood, a reception desk that a sheet metalworker could never fold. It is the fuller answer wherever a space was considering gold or silver leaf but wants the whole metal, not a whisper of it.
Choose Oxidation Effects when the brief specifically wants the grown, irregular texture of real corrosion — a restaurant, gallery or industrial-leaning interior that wants the gravity of age and weathering without waiting decades for it, and where a bright metal option was never on the table. It reads with a real depth a printed rust finish can’t fake, because it is the actual chemistry, not a picture of it.
Neither is a wet-zone or floor material, and neither is the answer if a client wants a durable, easily maintained finish for a high-contact surface — a metallic plaster or metallic epoxy tolerates rougher handling than either of these true reactive finishes.
The bottom line
Both finishes put real metal chemistry on a wall instead of an imitation of it — the choice is whether you want the freedom to stop at a bright polish or push toward a patina (Liquid Metal), or a finish committed from the outset to the grown texture of genuine rust or verdigris (Oxidation Effects).
