The short answer: a finished Liquid Metal surface needs almost nothing — dust it or wipe it with a dry or barely damp soft cloth, keep acids and abrasives away from it, and leave the sealed skin alone. It is a burnished metal surface under a protective seal, not a painted film, so the care routine is closer to looking after a piece of furniture than a wall finish. Priced on consultation, like every specialty surface we apply.
Understand what is actually on the wall
Liquid Metal is real bronze, copper, iron or aluminium powder worked into a binder and burnished until a true metal skin comes up, then sealed to lock the finish exactly where it was left (see does liquid metal keep rusting for the full mechanics of that seal). That seal is the whole reason the care list is short: there is a genuine barrier between the metal and the room, so day-to-day contact — hands, dust, the odd knock — does not touch the reactive metal underneath at all.
Routine care: less is genuinely more
Dusting is the entire weekly routine on most installations — a soft dry cloth or a feather duster, the same as you would use on a bronze light fitting or a framed mirror. For fingerprints or light marks, a barely damp microfibre cloth, wiped and immediately dried, lifts them without disturbing the seal. That is it for anything at normal height and normal traffic — most Liquid Metal walls in a home or office go months between anything beyond a dust cloth.
What to keep away from it
The seal is durable, not indestructible, and a handful of things genuinely damage it:
- Acidic or abrasive cleaners — vinegar, limescale removers, scouring creams, anything sold for grout or hard-water marks. These are formulated to etch or scratch, and a burnished metal skin is exactly what they are built to attack.
- Steel wool, scouring pads or stiff brushes. The finish is a worked surface, not a scrubbable one — anything abrasive will scratch through the burnish and the seal together.
- Standing water or repeated wet contact. This is a wall finish for feature surfaces, not a wet-zone material; it was never specified for a shower or splash-back, so it should never sit wet for long. If you want real metal warmth in a genuinely wet room, that brief belongs to a different, wet-rated surface entirely — talk to us before specifying liquid metal anywhere near water.
- Solvent-based cleaners and polish sprays. “Metal polish” products are made for bare, unsealed metal; used on a sealed surface they can dull or lift the top coat rather than shine it.
No reseal cycle — and why that surprises people
Unlike a waxed lime floor or an oiled timber surface, Liquid Metal does not sit on a maintenance calendar. There is no periodic rewax, no re-oiling, no scheduled refresh built into the spec — once burnished, patinated to the chosen tone and sealed, the surface is meant to hold that state indefinitely under normal indoor conditions. That is a genuine point in its favour against finishes like Pastellone or Encausto, which trade some of that low-maintenance ease for a living, hand-fed patina instead — see encausto wax care for what that upkeep actually looks like. Liquid Metal chooses permanence over patina; that is the deal, not a compromise.
If it does get damaged
A deep scratch, an impact mark, or an area that has genuinely dulled is a repair job for the same hands that installed it — Liquid Metal can be locally re-burnished and re-sealed by a specialist, but it is not a DIY touch-up the way a painted wall is. Do not reach for a home metal polish to try to fix it; that is more likely to spread the damage than hide it.
The honest comparison
If a household or a commercial cleaning contractor will not reliably keep acids and scrubbing off a feature wall, that is worth knowing before specification, not after — a sealed epoxy or a robust metallic plaster tolerates rougher handling than a true burnished metal skin. See metallic plaster vs metallic paint for the honest trade-off between the two.
