One finish, many names. Polished plaster is the trade name for stucco veneziano — Venetian plaster — burnished lime with marble dust in it; marmorino is its matte sibling; travertino its stone-textured cousin; “lime plaster” and “decorative plaster” are the umbrella words the UAE market uses for the whole family. The names confuse people because suppliers, designers and applicators each use a different one for the same wall. This page untangles them, says where each belongs, and explains how it is priced.

What is polished plaster?
Polished plaster is lime plaster with marble dust in the body, laid by trowel in thin coats and burnished by hand until the surface closes and shines. In Italy it is stucco veneziano; in the UAE and the UK trade it is polished plaster; most clients call it Venetian plaster. All three are the same thing. The burnish is what separates it from a matte lime finish: the trowel compresses the last coat until light travels a little way into the surface, which is why a polished plaster wall reads as marble rather than as painted plaster. It is priced per project, supply and install, and it is a wall finish only.
What is decorative plaster called?
Decorative plaster is called, depending on who is talking, polished plaster, Venetian plaster, stucco veneziano, marmorino, travertino, lime plaster or Italian plaster — and the honest answer to “what is decorative plaster” is simply any plaster applied to be seen rather than painted over. The family we apply is lime-based: stucco veneziano for the mirror sheen, marmorino for matte cloudy stone, travertino for open-pored stone texture, grassello di calce for the smooth satin base finish, and tadelakt for wet rooms. Gypsum-based decorative plasters — stucco lustro, scagliola — exist too, for dry rooms only. When a quote says “decorative plaster”, ask which of these it means and whether it is real lime.
The decorative plaster types we apply
The decorative plaster types worth knowing, in one list with honest uses: stucco veneziano — polished, marble-like, for walls meant to be noticed; marmorino — matte to satin, soft stone, the default for a majlis or living room; travertino — textured like travertine, for entrance halls and feature walls; grassello di calce — smooth satin lime, the quiet base of the family; tadelakt — burnished and soap-sealed, the only one for showers and hammams; limewash — brushed, chalky, the thinnest and least expensive way into lime; and the gypsum finishes stucco lustro and scagliola for formal dry rooms. Concrete-effect and metallic plasters are decorative too, but they are cement or acrylic systems, not lime, and they live on their own pages.
Polished plaster on a bathroom wall
Polished plaster on a bathroom wall is fine outside the shower — the vanity wall, the WC, behind a tub — sealed for humidity and with an extractor that runs. Inside the spray zone it is the wrong finish; there the lime answer is tadelakt, priced per project, or a microcement wet zone from AED 350/m². The full zoning, including the one plaster that never goes in a bathroom at all, is in can Venetian plaster go in a bathroom.
Can polished lime plaster go on a floor?
No. A polished lime plaster floor is not something we apply, and we would decline to quote it: the finish is thin coats of relatively soft lime, and feet, grit and furniture would scratch through it within months. When people search for a polished plaster floor, what they are usually picturing is a seamless, matte, mineral floor — and the surface that actually delivers that is microcement, from AED 250/m², made for everyday home floors. Polished plaster on the walls above a microcement floor is the honest pairing, and one we build often.
Decorative plaster walls in the UAE
Decorative plaster walls in the UAE do well because lime suits the climate: it breathes through air-conditioned interiors, resists mould in coastal humidity through its alkalinity, and stays cool to the eye under strong light. Where they belong: majlis and living-room feature walls, entrance halls and stairwells, hotel lobbies and corridors, restaurants, bedrooms behind the bed, ceilings that catch light, and bathroom walls outside the shower. Where they do not: floors, worktops, showers (except tadelakt) and exterior walls in full sun and rain, where a mineral silicate system is the better answer.
Is there a decorative plaster company near me?
Yes — RBS Group applies the whole lime family from Business Bay, Dubai, with its own in-house crews, across the UAE: Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and the northern emirates included. We supply and install as one job and do not sell plaster for DIY, because a decorative plaster is only as good as the hands that lay it. We have few public reviews yet; ask us to show you aged work instead. The commercial page, with how a project is priced and FAQs, is Venetian plaster in Dubai.
Decorative plaster price in the UAE
Decorative plasters in the UAE — marmorino and travertino, polished plaster (stucco veneziano), tadelakt and limewash — are each priced per project by RBS Group, supply and install, after a site visit. The price is mostly skilled hand labour, which is why the matte finish costs less than the polished one and why nobody honest sells the material without the crew. Every price driver is in the Venetian plaster cost guide.
Which name to ask for
Ask for the finish, not the umbrella word. “Polished plaster” or “Venetian plaster” gets you stucco veneziano and a sheen; “marmorino” gets you matte stone; “travertino” gets you texture; “tadelakt” gets you the shower; “limewash” gets you the brushed wash. “Lime plaster” and “decorative plaster” will get you a question back — which one? — and that question is a good sign, because it means the applicator knows the difference. Send a photo of the wall on WhatsApp or call +971 4 587 7086 and we will name the right finish honestly. 8+ years in the UAE, crews trained in-house.

FAQ
Who applies polished plaster in Dubai?
RBS Group applies polished plaster (stucco veneziano) and the rest of the lime family with its own in-house crews, from Business Bay across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates. It is supplied and installed as one job; we do not sell plaster for DIY.
Is polished plaster the same as Venetian plaster?
Yes. Polished plaster is the trade name for Venetian plaster — stucco veneziano: lime and marble dust trowelled in thin coats and burnished to a sheen. Marmorino is the matte version of the same family.
Is polished plaster the same as polished gypsum?
No. Polished plaster in the lime sense is slaked lime with marble dust; polished gypsum finishes such as stucco lustro and scagliola take a high shine too, but gypsum softens with repeated moisture, so they belong in dry, formal rooms only. Ask which one a quote means.
How much does polished plaster cost in Dubai?
Polished plaster is priced per project, supply and install, after a site visit. Most of the cost is skilled hand labour, so a burnished stucco veneziano costs more than a matte marmorino on the same wall; the Venetian plaster cost guide lists what moves the price.
Can polished plaster go in a bathroom or on a floor?
On bathroom walls outside the shower, yes, sealed and with an extractor running. Inside the shower the lime answer is tadelakt. On floors, no: lime is too soft for feet and grit, and microcement is the seamless mineral floor that does that job.
