This is the question we are asked more than any other, so here is the verdict up front: choose microcement if you want a seamless bathroom that forgives real life — hard modern sealer, any cleaner within reason, floors and walls in one system; choose tadelakt if you want the warmest, most alive wet-room surface there is and your household will respect its one rule: nothing acidic ever touches it. Both, built correctly, are genuinely fit for showers. Neither is “more waterproof” than the other — they keep water out in completely different ways, and that difference, not the look, is what should decide it.

Two different answers to the same question

Microcement is a system: liquid waterproofing membrane on the substrate, the cement-polymer coating over it, a penetrating sealer and a wet-grade topcoat above. The coating is the beautiful part; the membrane and sealer do the waterproofing — we explain this fully in is microcement waterproof. That layered build is exactly why it is so forgiving: the working skin is a hard modern sealer that tolerates normal bathroom cleaning without drama.

Tadelakt has no membrane and no synthetic sealer, and does not want one. It is lime plaster compacted with a stone and sealed by rubbing soap into the surface — the soap reacts with the lime and the water-repellency becomes part of the material itself. This is how Moroccan hammams have held steam and splash for centuries. It is genuinely water-safe, and it is also why its care rules are non-negotiable: acid dissolves lime, so one bottle of limescale spray can burn a patch no scrubbing will bring back (the full routine is in how to care for tadelakt).

Where each one wins

Microcement wins on forgiveness and continuity. It runs floor and wall in one uninterrupted material, takes the realities of a family bathroom — kids, cleaners, whatever is under the sink — and its repairs and re-seals are routine trade work. In UAE hard-water conditions, that tolerance matters more than brochures admit: mineral film builds on every shower wall here, and microcement lets you remove it without a ceremony.

Tadelakt wins on soul. No sealed surface has its glow — light moves inside a burnished lime wall in a way a topcoat cannot imitate, and it gains patina rather than wearing out. It suits a spa-like master bath, a powder room, a household that will keep a squeegee on the hook and the vinegar in the kitchen. It is hand-made by definition, priced per project — typically from AED 350/m² — because burnishing time depends entirely on the room’s shapes and details.

The honest failure modes

Neither material is usually what fails; the choice of household is. A tadelakt bathroom cleaned by rotation with supermarket descaler will be damaged, full stop — if that is your reality, choose microcement and enjoy it guilt-free. A microcement shower quoted without a membrane underneath, or resealed never, will also fail — if a quote does not mention waterproofing beneath the coating, walk away. And if what you actually love is grout-free tile-like hardness with zero maintenance thinking, be honest: a large-format porcelain bathroom is still a legitimate answer, and we will say so when it is.
