The honest answer up front: microcement itself is water-resistant, not waterproof — and in a wet room it does not need to be waterproof, because the actual waterproofing is a separate membrane applied underneath it. Sealed correctly, a microcement bathroom, shower or even pool works beautifully and lasts. Sealed carelessly, or laid straight onto a wall with no membrane behind it, it will let water through to the substrate. The finish is only as waterproof as the system beneath and the sealer on top — which is exactly why who lays it matters more than the material.
This is the question that stops most microcement bathrooms before they start, so it is worth answering properly rather than with a marketing “yes”.
Water-resistant vs waterproof — the distinction that matters
Microcement is a cement-and-polymer coating, 2–3mm thick. The cement in it is not waterproof — cement never is; it will slowly absorb water if left bare. What makes a microcement surface hold water out is two things working together:
- The waterproofing membrane underneath. In any real wet zone we apply a liquid waterproofing membrane to the substrate first, exactly as you would under tiles. That membrane is what actually stops water reaching the wall. The microcement is the beautiful, seamless finish that goes over it.
- The sealer on top. Microcement is finished with a penetrating sealer plus a protective topcoat — typically two-part polyurethane in wet areas. This is what stops the surface itself absorbing water, staining or letting moisture soak in. The sealer is the wear layer, and it is the part that has to be respected and eventually renewed.
Get both right and the surface is genuinely fit for showers and pools. Skip the membrane, or under-seal the surface to save an hour, and you have a floor that looks waterproof and is not.
Where microcement works with water — and where it is superb
Bathroom walls and floors. This is microcement’s best wet-room case. One seamless finish runs from floor to wall with no grout lines — and grout, not tile, is what fails and goes black in a UAE bathroom. Our microcement bathroom page covers the wet-zone build-up in detail.
Showers. Fully workable, and stunning when done — a seamless shower with no joints to mould. It demands the full system: membrane, correct falls to the drain, and a hard-wearing topcoat. This is not the place for the cheapest quote.
Pools and around pools. Microcement is used on pool interiors and surrounds, sealed with the appropriate system. It is specialist work — chlorine, constant immersion and UV are a harder ask than a bathroom — so it belongs only with an applicator who has done it before.
Kitchens and splashbacks. An easy, excellent use. Splashes are trivial for a properly sealed surface.
The honest limits
Standing water and neglected sealer are the real enemies. No coating loves permanent puddles. Falls have to be right so water drains, and the topcoat has to be maintained — a wet-zone sealer is not “fit and forget” for the life of the floor. Re-coating every few years in a hard-used shower is normal, not a fault.
It is a system, not a product. The failures we are called to fix are almost never the microcement itself — they are a missing membrane, poor falls, or a surface that was sealed too thin. If someone quotes you a microcement shower without mentioning waterproofing underneath, that is the quote to walk away from.
If the cleaning routine will be brutal, reconsider. Microcement’s sealer tolerates normal pH-neutral cleaning. Aggressive daily scrubbing with harsh chemicals will shorten the topcoat’s life anywhere.
When something else is the better wet-zone answer
Honesty is the point of these pages, so: microcement is not the only seamless wet surface, and it is not always the right one.

Which of the three is right depends on the look you want and how the room will be cleaned, not on which one is “more waterproof” — all three, correctly built, keep water where it belongs.
The bottom line
Microcement is not waterproof by itself, and it does not need to be — the waterproofing lives in the membrane underneath and the sealer on top, and the finish is only as good as both. Done as a proper system it gives you the best seamless, grout-free wet room there is. Done as a thin coat over a bare wall to hit a price, it fails. The material is not the risk; cutting the system is.
