Epoxy Terrazzo

What it is

Epoxy terrazzo is terrazzo with an epoxy resin binder instead of cement: marble or glass chips set in pigmented resin, poured as one seamless floor about a centimetre thick or less, then ground and polished. It is an indoor floor — epoxy ambers in direct sun. It is one finish within the wider epoxy flooring family.

It takes the oldest idea in flooring — stone fragments locked in a binder, ground back to a single polished plane — and rebuilds it in modern resin. Marble, granite, glass, even mirror and mother-of-pearl chips are folded into pigmented epoxy, poured seamless, then ground and polished until the floor turns glass-smooth. Where the classic pour needs several centimetres of cement, the epoxy version does its work in millimetres: lighter, faster to cure, and dense enough to shrug off what a lobby or mall floor takes in a day.

The palette is where it runs past its ancestor. Cement keeps terrazzo in mineral tones; resin will hold any colour it’s given — a white as clean as paper, a deep signature hue, a scatter of recycled glass that catches the light. Where it comes from

The craft is Venetian: marble-cutters setting their offcuts into the floors of their own homes, grinding them smooth, and turning thrift into an art the world still copies. The resin chapter was added in the twentieth century, when epoxy binders let the same speckled floor go thinner, lighter and faster — and let architects order colours no cement could carry. We treat the two as siblings: the classic cement pour for tradition and exteriors, the epoxy version for the interiors that want terrazzo at modern weight and pace.
