Does a Liquid Metal Wall Finish Keep Rusting?

The short answer: no — a finished, sealed Liquid Metal surface does not keep rusting or spreading once it leaves our hands. Any patina it carries (a soft verdigris on copper, a warm darkening on bronze) is coaxed to the tone you chose, then neutralised and sealed, and it holds there. What confuses people is a different finish that deliberately does keep reacting for a while by design — Oxidation Effects — and the two get mixed up because they look related. Here is the honest difference, and which one you actually want.

Two finishes, one confusing family resemblance

Both Liquid Metal and Oxidation Effects put real metal — bronze, copper, iron — on a wall by hand, and both can end up looking aged, green or rusted. That’s where the similarity ends, and the difference matters if you’re worried about a finish “getting away from you” after installation.

Liquid Metal builds a true, burnished skin of metal powder. It can be polished to a bright shine, or a patina can be worked into that skin as a tint — a controlled colour choice, not an uncontrolled reaction. Once it’s sealed, it stays exactly where you left it.

Oxidation Effects is a different, deliberately reactive system: real iron or copper particles in a coating are chemically triggered to actually corrode — genuine rust, genuine verdigris, growing in place over hours. That reaction is the point of the product. It, too, gets neutralised and sealed once it reaches the character you want — but until that sealing step, it is designed to keep moving, because that movement is what creates the one-of-a-kind, never-repeating texture.

So will my wall keep changing after the crew leaves?

If you chose Liquid Metal — no. Sealing is the last step of the job, and a sealed metal skin behaves like any other finished decorative surface: stable, cleanable, done. A patinated tone worked into a Liquid Metal surface was mixed and set by hand at application; it isn’t a live chemical reaction and won’t keep darkening on its own.

If you chose Oxidation Effects — the reaction is deliberately let run during installation, watched, and stopped by neutralising and sealing at the moment it looks right. After that point, sealed correctly, it behaves the same as Liquid Metal: no further change, no bleeding onto adjacent surfaces, no ongoing corrosion eating into the substrate. The “growing rust” is a manufacturing step, not an ongoing property of the finished wall.

The one honest caveat on both: like any finish, a seal can eventually wear thin in a genuinely hard-working spot (a bar front getting knocked and wiped daily, for instance), and if it does, the metal underneath can start reacting again where it’s exposed. That’s not the finish “failing” — it’s the seal reaching the end of its service life, the same story as a topcoat on any coated floor, and it’s fixed the same way: a re-seal, not a rebuild.

Which one should you actually choose?

If the brief is “I want the gravity and shine of real bronze or copper, maybe warmed with a bit of aged tone, and I never want to think about it again” — that’s Liquid Metal. It suits fireplace surrounds, cabinetry fronts, reception desks and curved feature walls where a controlled, chosen tone is the goal.

If the brief is “I want genuine, one-of-a-kind rust or verdigris texture, with all the irregularity a real reaction produces, and I’m choosing it precisely because no two panels will ever match” — that’s Oxidation Effects. It leans industrial, artistic, and suits feature walls, columns and hospitality interiors that want to read as raw and real rather than polished.

Neither belongs on a floor or in a wet zone — both are wall and feature-surface finishes, and both stay stable indefinitely once sealed. The choice between them isn’t about risk; it’s purely about which look you’re after.
