The honest answer: while the reaction is actively running during installation, an oxidation effects finish is genuinely staining — that’s real rust and real verdigris forming, and it must be managed and protected on site; once we neutralise and seal it at the end of the job, the reaction stops for good and a finished wall does not stain, bleed or mark anything it touches afterwards. The confusion is understandable, because the whole appeal of the finish is that it’s a genuine chemical reaction, not a printed effect — and a genuine reaction is exactly the kind of thing people worry will keep going somewhere it shouldn’t.
Two very different moments
Oxidation Effects has two distinct phases, and the staining question has two different answers depending on which one you mean.
During installation, real iron or copper particles in the coating are chemically triggered to actually corrode on the wall. That’s not a metaphor — it’s genuine rust and genuine verdigris, developing in place over hours while our crew watches and guides it toward the character you chose. Like any wet reactive process, it needs the same site discipline any wet trade uses near a finished floor or an adjacent wall: protection down, edges masked, the area controlled until the reaction is stopped. This is a normal, well-understood part of applying the finish — not a reason to avoid it — but it is the phase where the material genuinely could mark something if the site weren’t managed properly.
Once neutralised and sealed, the chemistry is switched off. The oxide is locked under a protective seal, and the wall behaves like any other finished decorative surface: stable, inert, and done reacting. It does not continue rusting, it does not bleed colour onto a skirting or a floor it’s touching, and it will not stain a hand, a sleeve or anything brushed against it in ordinary use.
Living with it afterwards
A finished, sealed oxidation effects wall is low-maintenance in the way most sealed feature finishes are: dust it, or wipe with a barely damp soft cloth for a mark. No acids, no abrasive pads — the same rule that protects every finish with metal or lime in it, because harsh chemicals can work through a seal faster than ordinary wear ever would. Nothing about daily contact reactivates the corrosion; the reaction needs the original chemical trigger, not proximity or humidity, to run again.
The one honest exception, shared with our Liquid Metal finish and explained fully in does a liquid metal wall keep rusting: if a seal is worn through after years in a genuinely hard-contact spot — a bar front knocked and wiped daily — the metal beneath can start reacting again where it’s exposed. That’s a seal reaching the end of its life, fixed with a re-seal, not the finish spontaneously staining something years later.
Why it stays a wall finish, not a floor one
This is also the honest reason oxidation effects belongs on walls, columns and joinery rather than floors or wet zones: a floor takes standing water, foot traffic and abrasion that a wall never does, all of which stress a seal far faster and raise the odds of the reaction being reawakened somewhere it would actually matter. On a feature wall, sealed correctly, that risk is effectively academic.
