Does a PU Self-Levelling Floor Dent, Scratch or Wear?

The honest short answer: yes — a PU self-levelling floor scratches and dents more readily than epoxy, and a loaded pallet truck or racking foot will leave its mark where an epoxy floor would not. That is the deliberate trade for the comfort and quiet the floor is chosen for, not a flaw in the material — and it is exactly why we say plainly when a project needs epoxy’s harder skin instead.

Why the floor gives a little in the first place

PU self-levelling floors are poured epoxy’s gentler sibling: the same idea of a liquid resin finding its own level and setting seamless, but polyurethane keeps a measure of elasticity for life where epoxy cures hard, glassy and unyielding. That elasticity is the whole point — it’s what makes the floor warmer and quieter underfoot, and what lets it flex over a building’s hairline movement instead of telegraphing every crack the way a rigid resin does. Softness and give are the same property read two ways: comfort when you’re standing on it, and a lower resistance to a sharp point when something heavy lands on it.

What actually marks it

  • Point loads. A pallet truck wheel, a racking foot, a dropped tool with a hard edge — anything that concentrates weight or impact on a small area will impress itself into a PU floor in a way it would not into epoxy’s harder surface.
  • Dragged furniture and equipment. The same rule as any resin floor, but it matters more here: felt pads and lifting rather than dragging protect the surface from fine scratching that shows more readily on PU’s softer finish.
  • Grit ground in underfoot. Dust-mopping before it accumulates matters on every seamless resin floor, and slightly more on PU, where embedded grit has an easier time scratching the surface than it would on epoxy.

Where that trade-off is honestly worth it

Galleries, retail floors, schools, clinics and offices choose PU precisely because the floor is walked and stood on for hours, not driven over with wheeled equipment or racked with pallets. In that use pattern, the marks above are rare, and the comfort and acoustic quiet the floor gives back every day are the more relevant fact. The finish is also more forgiving of an accidental drop — a dropped tool or object dents the moment and gets absorbed, where a harder, glassier resin might chip instead.

Where it honestly isn’t the right floor

Warehouse aisles, loading bays and anywhere wheeled or racked loads move across the floor are the wrong brief for PU. Poured epoxy or a broadcast/mortar epoxy system keeps its face intact under exactly that punishment, and we would rather point a heavy-duty industrial floor there than sell PU past what its elasticity can honestly take.

Strong direct sun without the right topcoat. The standard PU body will slowly amber under UV; a bright, sun-flooded room needs an aliphatic PU topcoat specified from day one, not added later as a fix.
