Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded: What's the Difference?

They sound almost identical and use the same stone, so they get mixed up constantly — but resin bound and resin bonded are laid two different ways and behave two different ways. In one line: resin bound is stone mixed into the resin and trowelled smooth, so it’s seamless, comfortable underfoot and permeable (water drains through). Resin bonded is loose stone scattered on top of a resin film, so it’s rough, textured and sealed (water runs off), which makes it grippier. For most UAE driveways, courtyards and pool surrounds, resin bound is the one people actually want; resin bonded earns its place on ramps, slopes and steps where grip beats everything. Resin bound vs resin bonded: the quick answer

Choose resin bound if you want a smooth, seamless, refined surface that drains freely and feels good barefoot — a driveway, a courtyard, a garden path, a pool surround on the flat. Choose resin bonded if grip is the first priority and the ground moves — a sloped driveway, a ramp, a set of steps, a pool edge that must not be slippery when wet. The materials are the same natural stone and the same UV-stable resin; the difference is entirely in the method, and the method decides everything about how the finished surface feels and drains.

Which is more permeable — and does that matter in the UAE?

Only resin bound is permeable: the tiny voids between the coated stones stay open, so rainwater drains straight through instead of pooling. Resin bonded seals the surface, so water runs off it and the design has to send that runoff somewhere with proper falls and drainage. In a climate that rains rarely but hard, permeability still matters more than people expect — a sudden downpour on a flat sealed surface puddles, while a resin-bound one simply drinks it. For a flat driveway or courtyard, that alone is often the deciding factor. Where the ground slopes, water was going to run off anyway, so resin bonded’s sealed nature is no longer a drawback — and its grip becomes the point.

Which is better for grip and safety?

Resin bonded, clearly. Because the stone tips stand proud rather than being trowelled flush, there is more texture underfoot, and it stays grippy even wet — which is exactly why it’s the honest choice for a ramp, a flight of steps, or a pool surround where bare wet feet are a slip risk. Resin bound is not slippery — its stone texture gives sensible grip for a driveway or path — but on a real incline or a wet pool edge, resin bonded is the safer specification, and we’ll say so rather than sell you the smoother-looking one for a spot that needs grip.

Which looks better?

This is where most homeowners land on resin bound. Trowelled smooth and seamless, it reads as a refined, continuous “stone carpet” — calm, modern, and kind to the eye across a big driveway or courtyard. Resin bonded has a rougher, more traditional, more textural look — closer to loose gravel that stays put. Neither is better in the abstract; they suit different houses. But for the large flat expanses most UAE villas have out front, the seamless resin-bound finish is usually the one people picture when they imagine the result.

What about cost?

Resin bound starts from AED 150 per square metre, supplied and installed — the one owner-confirmed anchor price, and still the only published resin-bound rate in the UAE market. Do they handle UAE heat the same way?

Both surfaces live outdoors in direct sun, so both must be laid with UV-stable aliphatic resin, or the binder ambers and the whole surface darkens over a few summers.
