What “permeable” actually means
Resin bound is natural aggregate fully coated in clear resin and hand-trowelled down, leaving the tiny voids between the stones open. Rain does not run off the surface the way it does off dense concrete or block paving — it drops straight through those voids into a permeable sub-base beneath, which is engineered with its own storage and drainage falls. That is a real, measurable difference from a sealed slab in ordinary and even heavy rain: no sheeting water crossing the surface, no puddles forming at the low point, no standing film for tyres to aquaplane through.
Where the honesty stops
The surface is only ever the first few centimetres of the system. Below it sits a compacted, permeable sub-base, and below that, the water needs an actual path — into the ground, into a drainage run, into the site’s stormwater design. Resin bound does not create that capacity; it simply gets out of the water’s way faster than a solid surface would. In an extraordinary rainfall event — the kind that overwhelms municipal drainage across an entire area, not just one driveway — the limiting factor is never the top few centimetres of aggregate. It is how much water the ground and the drainage network beneath and around the property can actually carry. A resin-bound driveway with no real fall, a blocked outlet, or ground that is already saturated will still flood — just later than the concrete next to it would have.
What actually determines the outcome
The sub-base design, not the surface finish. A properly built resin-bound build-up includes a permeable sub-base with its own storage volume and a drainage path — a soakaway, a connection to the site’s stormwater system, or a fall to a lower point that can actually take the water. Skip that design step and lay a thin permeable skin over a sealed or poorly draining base, and you have bought the look of permeability without the function.
Falls and levels. Water that reaches the sub-base still needs somewhere to travel. A flat or poorly graded installation traps water in the sub-base itself, and over time that saturation reduces how much more the surface can absorb in the next storm.
Maintenance of the pores. Dust, silt and organic debris settle into the surface voids over the years and gradually reduce infiltration if the surface is never washed. What’s happening around the property, not just on it. A driveway that drains perfectly can still flood if the surrounding land, road or neighbouring plots are shedding water onto it faster than the sub-base can absorb. No surface material, permeable or not, changes the site’s overall drainage catchment.
Where this leaves loose gravel and pavers, honestly
Loose gravel is genuinely permeable too, in principle — but it migrates, ruts under vehicle weight, and offers no engineered sub-base or fall unless one was built beneath it, which is rarely the case in a simple gravel drive. Resin bound genuinely reduces standing water and everyday flood-adjacent nuisance — that part is real and worth having.
