How to Care for a Spatolato Wall

The honest answer first: spatolato asks for almost nothing — dust it dry, wipe an occasional mark with a barely-damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner, and keep every acid away from it, because underneath that cloudy tone-on-tone finish it is still lime, and lime etches on contact with anything acidic. That is a lighter routine than a bathroom or a kitchen surface, but it is a real one, and treating the wall like ordinary painted plaster is how a calm spatolato feature wall ends up patchy years before it should.

Why the routine follows lime, not paint

Spatolato is hand-trowelled lime, worked in thin overlapping passes until the wall holds a soft, cloudy movement rather than a flat colour. There is no wax skin here and no hard topcoat — unlike encausto, its waxed lime sibling, spatolato is left bare, the way marmorino and stucco veneziano are. That means the same mineral chemistry and the same one rule governs its care: lime carbonates into a genuinely breathable stone-like surface, and anything acidic — vinegar, lemon, limescale remover, most bathroom sprays — reacts with it on contact and can leave a dull, etched patch that no amount of polishing brings back.

The everyday routine

Dust dry, most of the time. A soft microfibre cloth or a dry duster lifts the fine dust that settles on any UAE interior wall, and for a spatolato feature wall that is genuinely most of what it ever needs.

A barely-damp cloth for marks. A fingerprint by a light switch or a smudge near a doorway comes off with a soft cloth wrung out almost dry, a drop of pH-neutral soap if needed, then a second dry cloth straight after. Never soak the wall — lime is breathable and does not want to sit wet.

pH-neutral only, full stop. The same mild cleaner sold for natural stone or marble is the strongest thing that should ever touch it. Reaching for a “stronger” spray the first time it marks is the single most common way a spatolato wall gets permanently dulled.

What actually damages it

  • Acids and descalers — the same rule as every lime finish in the house. A limescale spray, a bathroom “power” cleaner or an all-purpose acidic spray etches the surface on the first wipe.
  • Abrasive scrubbing — a scouring pad works through the trowelled surface unevenly, burnishing some passes and dulling others, which is more visible on spatolato than on a flatter finish because the whole point of the wall is its gentle, tone-on-tone movement.
  • Constant wet contact — spatolato is a dry-interior wall finish by design, not made for showers, splashbacks or the outdoors. For a wall that genuinely lives in water, tadelakt or a microcement shower wet zone is the honest answer, not a sealed-up spatolato.

Why cloudy movement makes the acid rule matter more

Spatolato’s whole appeal is that no two passes of the trowel read quite the same — a deliberate, soft unevenness rather than a flat coat of colour. That is exactly why an etched or scrubbed patch stands out more here than it would on a uniformly painted wall: the eye is already reading tonal shifts across the surface, so one dulled square where a spray was wiped breaks the calm the whole finish is built to give a room. The fix is not vigilance so much as habit — keep the cleaning cupboard boring, and the wall stays boring in the best sense, one calm colour from across the room, for decades.

If a mark does happen

A genuine knock or an etched patch is repairable the way paint never is, because the wall is a few millimetres of real lime rather than a coat sprayed on top of something else. A skilled hand can cut back, re-trowel and blend the small area so the repair disappears into the surrounding movement — not a DIY job, since matching the rhythm of the trowel is the actual craft, but proof that a hand-laid lime wall is a decades-long surface rather than a redecorate-every-few-years one.
