Concrete-Effect Plasters

What it is

Concrete-effect plasters — sold under names like Concrete Art and cemento materico — are decorative trowelled coatings that give a wall the presence of raw cast concrete: the cloudy grey drift, the shadows and pull-marks of a pour, sometimes the ghost of formwork boards. All of it arrives a few millimetres thick, worked by hand over an ordinary sound wall. That is the whole proposition in one line: the look without the slab. No shuttering, no structure, no tonnes of material — a plaster that speaks concrete’s language on walls that were never poured.

Its home is the feature surface. A living-room or majlis wall, a restaurant backdrop, a lobby, a headboard wall — anywhere the raw, architectural register earns its keep as the room’s strongest gesture. At the fine end the finish sits calm and fair-faced; at the materico end it turns heavily textural, almost geological, with real relief under raking light.

Two of our cement cousins sit close by, and the differences matter. Microcement is not just a look but a performance coating — a thin engineered system, sealed and detailed for floors, stairs and wet zones, where a decorative wall plaster has no business. If the concrete look needs to run underfoot or into a bathroom, microcement is the answer. Béton Ciré is the warm one — a waxed cement finish with a honeyed, lived-in glow, softer and more domestic than the raw register these plasters chase. And where a real slab already exists and deserves to be the finish itself, we grind it — Polished Concrete — rather than imitate it.

Where it comes from

The demand came from architecture. Brutalism first, then the quiet fair-faced concrete of contemporary masters, made bare grey walls one of the most admired surfaces in modern building — and one of the least attainable, because most buildings are simply not made of exposed cast concrete. That is doubly true in the UAE, where villas and towers alike are built of blockwork, render and gypsum partitions. Plaster manufacturers answered with cement-based decorative coatings that could put the admired surface on the walls people actually have.

We apply them for exactly that honest purpose: when a design wants concrete’s austerity and the building cannot supply it, a hand-trowelled effect plaster — laid by our own in-house crews — delivers the register at a fraction of the weight, cost and disruption.
