The honest short answer: concrete-effect plaster chases the raw, cloudy, board-marked look of cast concrete straight off a construction site — it wants to look architectural and a little cold. Béton ciré starts from the same cement family but is worked to a soft, waxed, honeyed glow — it wants to look lived-in and warm. Both are hand-trowelled cement coatings a few millimetres thick with no grout lines, and both are wall-first finishes. The choice comes down to temperature: do you want the room to read as raw architecture, or as a warm, waxed surface that invites touch?
Same family, different ambition
Concrete-effect plaster and béton ciré share a genuine lineage — both are cement-based trowelled coatings sold under French and Italian names (Concrete Art, cemento materico, “waxed concrete”) that put a concrete-adjacent look on ordinary blockwork, render or gypsum partitions without pouring a slab. Neither needs structural work, and both arrive light enough for stud walls to wear convincingly.
Where they split is finish and intent. Concrete-effect plaster is left matte and unsealed in its rawest form — the trowel shadows, cloudy grey drift and ghost of formwork boards are the point, and at the materico end the texture turns genuinely geological under raking light. Béton ciré is worked further: burnished, then finished with wax to a low, honeyed sheen that keeps deepening with age. One is meant to look poured yesterday; the other is meant to look cared for over years.
Colour and mood
Concrete-effect plaster stays almost entirely in the grey register — that is the raw-cast-concrete language it is built to speak, tunable from a calm fair-faced grey to a heavier, more textural industrial finish. Béton ciré ranges wider: the same cement base takes warmer, more livable tones, and the wax finish itself adds a glow no matter the underlying colour. A brutalist-leaning loft or a design office chasing an architectural, slightly austere register reaches for concrete-effect plaster. A living room, bathroom or bedroom that wants concrete’s calm without its coldness reaches for béton ciré. If the concrete look is meant to carry onto the floor too, microcement colours explains how a mineral tone shifts under the sealer and in UAE light, and why you sample on your own wall.
Where each one is honestly allowed to go
This is the sharpest practical difference. Concrete-effect plaster is a wall-only finish — it is not made for floors or wet zones, and microcement is the answer when the concrete look needs to run across a home floor or into a shower (it is not a heavy-use floor either). Béton ciré is more flexible: its considerations note it can be sealed for use in kitchens and bathrooms, though a wet area still asks for care in how it is sealed and maintained. Neither is a substitute for polished concrete where a real structural slab already exists and deserves to be ground and finished as itself rather than imitated.
Upkeep
Béton ciré’s wax patina is a small standing commitment — it wants occasional re-waxing to keep its glow, the same rhythm as any waxed lime or wood surface. Concrete-effect plaster, left matte and unsealed, asks for less routine attention day to day, but repairs and scuffs are blended by eye rather than resealed, so a heavily trafficked wall will show its patina evolve over time rather than staying pristine.
Which one, in practice
| Concrete-effect plaster | Béton ciré | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Raw, cloudy, architectural grey | Warm, waxed, honeyed glow |
| Best rooms | Majlis, retail, offices, showrooms | Living spaces, bathrooms, kitchens, hallways |
| Where it can go | Walls only | Walls, and — sealed — wet-tolerant surfaces |
| Character over time | Patina evolves; repairs blended by eye | Deepens with re-waxing |
Choose concrete-effect plaster when the brief is genuinely architectural — a feature wall that wants to feel like exposed structure. Choose béton ciré when the brief wants concrete’s calm without concrete’s chill, especially anywhere near water. Neither replaces microcement on a floor or in a wet zone, and neither replaces a real ground slab where one already exists — we will point you to the right one rather than stretch either finish past its honest limits.
