Does an Encausto Wax Finish Scratch or Mark Over Time?

The honest short answer: encausto’s wax skin genuinely resists the daily contact marks that dull bare lime plaster, but it is a fed wax finish on a soft mineral wall, not a hard shell — a firm knock, a dragged object or acid contact will still mark it.

Why the wax changes the answer

Encausto is Venetian lime plaster the same way marmorino and stucco veneziano are, right up to the last step. Where those two finishes are left as bare, burnished lime, encausto has wax worked into the still-firm surface and burnished in with it. That wax layer is what changes the marking story: bare lime is porous and absorbs contact — a greasy hand, a leaned shoulder, a splash — slowly and visibly, which is why marmorino asks to be left alone rather than touched. Encausto’s wax gives the same lime body a working skin that sheds a light touch and takes a wipe, which is exactly why we put it on hallway walls and headboard walls where the other two lime finishes would rather not go.

That resistance is real, but it has a shape. It is a fed, burnished wax over a genuinely soft lime plaster, not a lacquer or a hard coating — so the marks it resists are the everyday ones (fingerprints, a light lean, a stray splash), not the ones that would mark any wall finish.

What actually marks or dulls it

  • A hard knock or a dragged object — furniture pushed against it, a bag scraped past, a door handle striking it — can still dent or scuff the lime underneath, wax or no wax. The wax protects the surface from contact, not from impact.
  • Acids and harsh cleaners — vinegar, descalers, anything acidic still etches the lime beneath the wax, exactly as it would on bare marmorino or tadelakt. This is the one rule that carries across every lime finish we apply, waxed or not.
  • Abrasive cleaning — a scouring pad or an aggressive scrub will cut through the wax layer itself, leaving a dulled patch that stands out against the surrounding sheen until it is re-waxed.
  • Long-term wear without re-waxing — the wax is a living surface, not a permanent seal. Left untouched for years under real contact, it thins and the glow dulls before the lime beneath is ever at risk. Re-waxing periodically is maintenance, not repair.
  • Sun and constant heat near a window can soften wax over time in the same way it would any waxed surface, though this shows as a change in sheen long before it affects the lime.

What it genuinely tolerates

The wax is the whole reason encausto exists as a distinct finish, and its point is exactly the marks above the ones listed — fingerprints in a hallway, a shoulder against the wall by a doorway, a light water splash near a powder room basin. Where marmorino would show that contact as a slow, visible dulling, encausto sheds it and takes a wipe with a soft, damp cloth. That is a genuine, useful difference for a wall that gets used, not just looked at.

The honest limit

Encausto is a wall finish for rooms with normal daily contact — dining rooms, entrance halls, headboard walls, powder rooms away from direct water. It is not built for constant abrasion (a stair wall brushed by bags every day) or constant wetness (a shower wall, a pool surround) — those belong to a genuinely wet-tolerant surface like tadelakt or microcement wet zones (we compared tadelakt vs microcement for showers), and for the waxed-lime look underfoot rather than on a wall, pastellone is the floor built to take footfall the way encausto takes a hand.

Where RBS applies it

We apply encausto as a wall-only finish, trained in-house and never subcontracted, with the same acid-avoidance and periodic re-waxing routine we recommend for every polished plaster and lime finish we install. If a wall needs to survive more than daily contact — real abrasion or standing water — we’ll say so before recommending encausto over the alternative built for that job.
