Is Epoxy Flooring Slippery in the UAE?

A smooth, glossy epoxy floor can be slippery when it is wet — and dry, it has roughly the grip of any polished hard floor, which is to say fine for normal walking and no worse than porcelain or polished concrete. The important part is that slip resistance on epoxy is a specification you choose, not a fixed property you’re stuck with: the same floor can be poured mirror-smooth for a dry showroom, or built with a fine anti-slip texture for a kitchen, bathroom or garage where water lands. So the honest answer is: yes, plain gloss epoxy is slippery wet — and no, an epoxy floor doesn’t have to be, if it’s specified for where it actually lives. How do you stop epoxy flooring being slippery?

Add grip at the pour, not afterwards: a fine quartz or aggregate broadcast in the wet coat, decorative flake with a textured topcoat, or a satin or matte finish in place of gloss. Why smooth epoxy is slippery when wet

A poured, high-gloss epoxy floor is sealed and non-porous — that’s the whole point, and it’s why it wipes clean and shrugs off spills. But that same sealed, glassy surface offers water nothing to key into, so a film of water (or dust on top of gloss) sits on the surface and reduces grip, exactly like a wet polished tile. Dry, it’s a normal hard floor. The slip risk is specifically a wet gloss problem — a splash by a sink, a wet footprint from the pool, a garage floor washed down — not something wrong with epoxy itself.

How RBS makes an epoxy floor grippy

Grip is built in during the pour, and there’s a ladder of options depending on how much traction the room needs:

• A broadcast texture. Fine aggregate or quartz is scattered into the wet coat and sealed over, leaving a subtle “orange-peel” tooth you barely see but your feet feel. It’s the standard fix for wet-prone areas and adds grip without giving up the clean look.
• Flake epoxy. The decorative vinyl chips that give a garage or utility floor its speckled finish also break up the surface — a fine-flake floor with a textured topcoat has real underfoot grip, which is part of why it’s the default for UAE garages and workshops.
• A matte topcoat. Knocking the gloss back to satin or matte reduces the “wet mirror” effect and hides dust, which helps too.
• Grade the room. For a genuinely wet zone, the floor should also fall gently to a drain so water leaves rather than sits — grip and drainage together, not grip alone.

The trade-off is honest: the grippier the texture, the slightly harder the floor is to mop perfectly clean, because texture holds a little more dust. That’s a fair exchange in a garage or a wet kitchen; in a dry showroom where you want the mirror, you don’t need it. Where we’d tell you to choose something else

This is where honesty beats the sale. If the floor is outdoors, wet and in the sun — a pool surround, a driveway, a terrace — epoxy is the wrong surface regardless of how you texture it: it ambers and chalks under UV (see does epoxy flooring yellow), and a wet outdoor floor needs both grip and drainage. For that, the right answer is resin bound — a permeable, naturally grippy stone surface that drains straight through and is built for sun — or its rougher sibling resin bonded on ramps and slopes. And for a constantly wet shower or bathroom floor, a textured epoxy will do the job, but many homeowners are better served by a surface designed for wet zones. We’d rather point you to the right material than sell you a textured epoxy for a spot where something else belongs.

So — is it safe for a UAE home?

Yes, when it’s specified for the room. A dry living space, showroom or retail floor is safe in smooth gloss. A garage, laundry, kitchen or any splash-prone interior should be poured with a broadcast or flake texture, and it will then hold grip wet — comparable to, and often better than, the polished tiles it’s replacing. The mistake is pouring a mirror-gloss floor into a wet room because it looked good in a photo; the fix is telling the applicator where water will land before the floor goes down. The lasting answer depends on why it is slippery and how the coating has aged: an outdoor epoxy porch in UAE sun is often chalking or yellowing as well, and a new gloss coat on top would bring the same problem back.
