Stone Wall Cladding in the UAE: Natural Stone, Flexible Stone or a Stone-Look Plaster?
Stone wall cladding is the right choice for a villa facade, a boundary wall or an entrance that must look and feel like real stone for decades — natural stone is heavy, non-combustible and very durable, but it is the most expensive wall option once the stone, the fixings and the labour are counted, and every piece meets the next at a joint. Flexible stone (a thin layer of real stone on a flexible backing) is light and bends round curves, but it is a thin sheet glued to the wall, so it depends on its adhesive and shows its sheet joints. Where you want the look of stone without the weight or the joints — most interior feature walls, and many outside walls — a stone-look plaster is usually the better wall: travertino or marmo antico lime plaster inside, silicate mineral plaster or microcement in its outdoor-rated colours outside.
We should say plainly what we do and do not do. RBS does not supply or fix stone cladding, stone veneer, flexible stone sheets or cladding panels — that is a stone or facade contractor’s trade. We apply seamless wall finishes: lime plasters such as travertino and marmo antico, silicate mineral plaster for facades, and microcement on walls. This guide compares them honestly, because on some walls real stone is the right answer and we would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong finish.
What is stone wall cladding?
Stone wall cladding is a non-structural layer of stone fixed to the face of a wall. It does not hold the building up; it covers block, concrete or render so the wall looks and wears like stone. In the UAE you will meet four kinds:
- Natural stone slabs and tiles — limestone, sandstone, travertine, marble, granite or slate, cut to slabs or tiles, bedded in adhesive on low walls or hung on stainless anchors on a facade.
- Split-face and ledgestone strips — rough, stacked-looking strips of stone that give a rustic, layered face; common on garden walls, gate pillars and fireplace breasts.
- Manufactured (cast) stone veneer — concrete cast in moulds and coloured to look like stone. Lighter than real stone, but it is concrete, and its colour sits in the surface.
- Flexible stone — a very thin layer of real stone peeled from a block onto a fibreglass or fabric backing, sold in sheets you can bend and glue.
All four are made of separate pieces, so the wall is only as good as its fixing and its joints.
Natural stone cladding: where it is worth the weight
Natural stone is genuinely the right material for many UAE villa facades. It does not burn, it does not fade the way an organic paint or render does, and a good limestone or sandstone weathers slowly rather than failing. On a front elevation, a gate pillar or a boundary wall that takes full sun, sand and the occasional wash-down, a well-fixed stone face can last as long as the house.
The honest costs are weight, fixing and joints. Stone is heavy, so the wall behind it, the anchors and the adhesive have to be designed for that load — on anything above a low garden wall, ask the contractor who designs the fixing and whether an engineer has checked it, and ask your community or building management what they require before work starts. Every slab meets the next at a joint, and those joints are where water, dust and efflorescence (white salt bloom) show first. Porous stones such as sandstone and some limestones need sealing and resealing, and a stone that is light at the quarry can stain from irrigation water splashing on a garden wall.
None of that is a reason to avoid stone — only to choose it where its solidity is the point, and to get the fixing right.
What is flexible stone, and does it work in the UAE?
Flexible stone — also sold as stone veneer sheets or thin stone — is a very thin slice of real stone, often slate, sandstone or a mica-rich stone, bonded to a flexible backing. It is light, bends round a column or a curved wall, and is cut and glued on, so it goes up fast.
Where it works: interior feature walls, columns, curved reception desks, shop fronts under a canopy, and any wall that cannot take the weight of real stone. Where to be careful: a thin glued sheet is only as good as the adhesive and the wall behind it, and in direct UAE sun on a dark stone the surface gets very hot, which tests that bond. Sheets meet at visible joints, and some sandstone-type sheets shed fine grains when rubbed or brushed, so they suit walls people look at more than walls people lean on. Ask the supplier which sheets are rated for outdoor use, which adhesive they specify, and how a damaged sheet is replaced.
Stone cladding vs a stone-look plaster
A stone-look plaster is not stone — it is a lime or mineral plaster trowelled on in layers, giving the colour, depth and texture of stone in one continuous surface, with no slabs, anchors or joints, at a fraction of the weight.
- Travertino is a lime plaster that copies the honey-and-ivory, softly pitted look of travertine. It is an interior finish for dry walls: entrance halls, majlis walls, lift lobbies, fireplace breasts. Our guide to travertino effect walls compares it with real travertine in detail.
- Marmo antico is a textured lime plaster made to look like old, weathered stone — a raised, worn relief rather than a polished face.
- Silicate mineral plaster is the exterior answer: a matte, breathable mineral texture for facades and boundary walls that holds its colour in full Gulf sun. Our guide to which walls suit silicate mineral plaster covers where it belongs.
- Microcement on walls gives a seamless, cement-stone look rather than a quarried one. Inside it suits feature walls, bathrooms and stairwells; outside it goes on walls only in its outdoor-rated colours, because part of the microcement range is rated for indoor and outdoor use and the rest is indoor-only. Our article on microcement walls in the UAE explains the wall build-up.
The honest trade-off: a plaster looks like stone from a step away and feels like a mineral wall to the hand. If you want to touch real split stone and see real joints, choose cladding. If you want the look of stone across a large or curved wall without joints and weight, a plaster is usually better.
Inside vs outside: which walls suit which
Outside, UAE walls take strong UV, big day-night temperature swings, sand-laden wind and irrigation splash. Natural stone and silicate mineral plaster are built for that; microcement goes outside only in its outdoor-rated colours; flexible stone needs a sheet and adhesive rated for it; travertino and marmo antico stay inside or under a deep canopy.
Inside, the stresses are air conditioning, condensation near AC vents and people brushing past, so the weight and joints of stone matter more than its weather resistance, and a seamless plaster is easier to live with. In a shower, neither flexible stone nor a decorative lime plaster is right: use tiles, stone over a proper waterproofing system, or microcement in its wet-zone system (see microcement in the bathroom).

What does stone wall cladding cost in Dubai?
We do not publish prices for stone cladding or flexible stone, because we do not supply or fix either and any figure from us would be a guess. Their price depends on the stone, its thickness, the fixing system, the height of the wall and access, so get two or three written quotes from stone contractors that list the stone, the fixing method and who is responsible for the anchors and sealing.
For the finishes we do apply: microcement on walls starts from AED 220/m²; the final quote follows a site visit, because the state of the wall, the build-up and access all affect it. Lime plasters such as travertino and marmo antico, and silicate mineral plaster, are priced per project after a site visit. What moves any wall price is explained in what affects the price of a decorative surface.
Which one should you choose?
- A villa facade, gate pillars or a boundary wall that must feel solid for decades: natural stone cladding, properly fixed and sealed — or silicate mineral plaster if the wall cannot take the weight or you want no joints.
- A rustic garden wall or fireplace with a stacked-stone look: split-face or ledgestone strips. That texture is hard to imitate honestly in plaster.
- A curved wall, a column or a wall that cannot carry weight, where you want real stone on the surface: flexible stone, with a sheet and adhesive rated for where it goes.
- An interior feature wall, entrance hall or majlis where you want the look of travertine or old stone without joints: a lime plaster — travertino or marmo antico. Our Venetian plaster page shows the wider lime family we apply.
- A modern, seamless stone-grey wall inside, or an outside wall on a terrace or balcony: microcement — outside only in its outdoor-rated colours.
- A shower wall: not flexible stone and not a decorative lime plaster — tiles, waterproofed stone, or microcement in its wet-zone system.
If you are not sure which side of the line your wall falls on, send us a photo on WhatsApp. We will tell you honestly whether it is a plaster job or a stone job — and if it is stone, we will say so.

FAQ
Is stone cladding good for exterior walls in the UAE?
Yes. Natural stone is one of the most durable facade finishes in the UAE: it does not burn, it holds up to strong sun, and a good limestone or sandstone weathers slowly. Its costs are weight, a fixing system designed for that weight, joints that need care, and sealing on porous stones. Where the wall cannot carry stone, silicate mineral plaster gives a durable mineral face without the weight.
What is flexible stone made of?
A very thin layer of real stone — often slate, sandstone or a mica-rich stone — peeled from a block and bonded to a flexible fibreglass or fabric backing. It is light, bends round curves and is glued to the wall. Because it is thin and glued, the adhesive and the wall behind it matter, and some sheets shed fine grains when rubbed.
Is flexible stone better than natural stone cladding?
It is lighter, faster and easier on curves, so it wins on columns, curved walls and walls that cannot carry weight. Natural stone wins on depth, solidity and long life on an exposed facade. Neither is seamless: both show joints.
Is stone-look plaster cheaper than stone cladding?
We cannot give a like-for-like figure, because we do not quote stone. A plaster has no stone, no anchors and far less weight, so different things drive its cost: the state of the wall, the effect and access. Our microcement walls start from AED 220/m²; lime and silicate plasters are priced per project after a site visit.
Can microcement look like stone on an outside wall?
It gives a seamless cement-stone look, not a quarried, jointed one. Outside, microcement goes on walls only in its outdoor-rated colours — part of the range is indoor-only. For a textured, matte facade, silicate mineral plaster is often the better exterior choice.
Do you install stone cladding or flexible stone?
No. RBS does not supply or fix stone cladding, stone veneer, flexible stone or cladding panels. We apply seamless wall finishes — lime plasters, silicate mineral plaster and microcement. If real stone is right for your wall, a stone contractor is the right call, and we will tell you so.
How much does stone cladding cost in Dubai?
It depends on the stone, its thickness, the fixing system, the wall height and access, so there is no honest single figure. Get two or three written quotes from stone contractors listing the stone, the fixing method and who is responsible for the anchors and sealing. We price only the seamless finishes we apply, as set out above.
What is stone cladding, and what is it used for?
Stone cladding is a facing of stone fixed to the outside of a wall, as natural stone pieces, as thin flexible stone sheets, or as a stone-look finish that imitates it. In the UAE it is used on villa facades, boundary walls, entrances and feature walls. RBS does not fix stone cladding, but we do apply the seamless stone-look alternatives; see silicate mineral plaster and microcement in Dubai (outdoor-rated colours only outside).
