What each surface actually is

Interlock pavers are individual concrete or clay blocks, laid dry over a compacted base and bedding sand, then locked together with jointing sand brushed into the gaps between them. Nothing bonds them chemically — the pattern and the sand are what hold the surface together.

Resin bound stone is natural aggregate fully coated in clear resin and hand-trowelled into one continuous, jointless sheet over a prepared base. Every stone is locked in place by the resin, but the tiny voids between stones stay open, so it drains.

Where pavers genuinely win

Be honest about this upfront, because a driveway is a real investment. Pavers are typically the cheaper install — the material and labour are a mature, high-volume trade with a lot of competition on price. And because each block is a separate unit, a cracked or oil-stained paver can be lifted and swapped without touching the rest of the drive — a genuine advantage resin bound and any poured surface simply can’t match; damage to a seamless system is repaired by blending in a patch, not by popping out one tile.

A resin-bound surface has no sand joints at all — nothing to top up, nothing for a seed to root in.

Genuine permeability. Resin bound drains water through the surface, not around it — a real advantage in the UAE’s short, intense downpours, when a paved drive can sheet-flow water toward the villa entrance faster than the fall can carry it away. Some paver systems offer a “permeable” jointing option, but it depends on the joint sand staying open and unclogged, which is exactly the part that degrades first.

A smoother, quieter ride and walk. Pavers have a grid of small steps at every joint — tyres tick over them, and heels can catch the edges. Resin bound is one continuous plane, comfortable barefoot by a pool and quiet under a car.

Individual blocks can work loose. Without a rigid bond, high point-loads (a heavy vehicle turning sharply, tree roots pushing from below) can rock or lift individual pavers over time, needing them to be re-bedded. A resin-bound sheet, properly built up on a sound base, doesn’t have individual units to work loose.

The honest limit on resin bound

Resin bound needs an existing sound, well-prepared base to be laid onto or built up on — it isn’t laid loose the way pavers can be over a simple compacted sub-base in some budget installs.
