Spray & Stencil Concrete

What it is

Spray-crete — stencil concrete — is the renovation branch of the decorative concrete family. A polymer-modified cement topping is spray-applied over an existing slab in a layer a few millimetres thick, landing as a fine, evenly textured new surface. Lay paper or plastic stencils down first and the overlay arrives patterned: paver layouts, tile grids, borders, all in fresh colour, with the “joints” appearing where the stencil masked the spray. Lift the stencils and a tired grey driveway reads as new paving — without a single slab being broken out. It shares its chemistry with our Cementitious Overlay, but the two split the work cleanly: the overlay is poured flat and smooth, mostly indoors, as a levelling base for finer finishes; spray-crete is the exterior branch — textured, patterned, and itself the finish.

That is the job it exists for. Exterior concrete ages badly in this climate — sun-bleached, patched, oil-stained — but the slab itself is often structurally fine, and demolishing sound concrete to fix its appearance is money thrown away. An overlay renews the surface in days, in an occupied home, for a fraction of the cost of repouring. The sprayed texture is also honestly useful: fine, open and slip-resistant, it is a classic pool-deck surface, and its light tones stay kinder to bare feet in summer than dark dense paving.

Honesty draws the boundaries. First, this is a skin, not a new slab — millimetres of decorative cement bonded to whatever is beneath. Active cracks and movement in the base will telegraph through in time, so a failing slab needs repair before it needs decoration, and we say so on inspection. Second, pattern is taste, and taste dates: stencilled paver effects read as imitation up close, and we generally steer clients toward plainer, subtler layouts that age better. Third, where the budget allows, better answers exist. Where it comes from

Decorative resurfacing grew up in the sun-belt renovation markets of America and Australia in the late twentieth century, wherever suburbs full of ageing driveways and pool decks met owners unwilling to repour them. Polymer-modified cements made it possible — thin toppings that bond tenaciously and shrug off weather — and the spray gun and stencil made it fast and repeatable.
