Mirror drama — stucco veneziano

It is the show-piece of the lime family, and it has show-piece demands: it wants a flat, well-prepared substrate and decent light to perform, and it shows a scuff more readily than any matte finish. Carved pattern — sgraffito, on consultation
Sgraffito is the artisan option: two or more layers of coloured lime, with the pattern cut through the top layer by hand while it is still workable, so the design is in the wall, not printed on it. Geometric lattices, calligraphy-inspired lines, one large motif behind a bed or a majlis seat — each wall is drawn for the room, then carved once. It is slow, genuinely bespoke handwork, priced per design. Choose it when you want the one wall in the house nobody else has.
Shimmer — metallic plasters, on consultation
Metallic plasters load the surface with metallic and mica pigments, so the wall shifts as you move past it — bronze, champagne, graphite, holding a low glow by lamplight. In the UAE they earn their keep in evening rooms: dining walls, home cinemas, hotel-style bedheads, majlis niches with warm lighting. The honest caveat: they live or die by lighting design. Under flat midday light a metallic wall goes quiet; plan it with the lamps, not instead of them.
Soft light — velvet and suede effects, on consultation
Velvet and suede effects are the tactile whisper of the specialty family: a fine directional nap that moves light softly, like brushed fabric. Where metallics glint, velvet glows. It suits bedrooms and quiet formal rooms — anywhere you want warmth and depth with zero shine. Like all soft, low-sheen surfaces it prefers being admired to being scrubbed, so keep it away from corridors and children’s high-traffic zones.
Budget texture — texture paints, honestly
And the honest bottom rung: texture paints — sand-textured, stone-effect and limewash-effect decorative coatings. They give a painted wall real grain and a hand-finished character at the lowest cost on this page, and for a rented apartment or a first accent wall they are the right call, not a compromise to apologise for. Be clear-eyed about the difference: a texture paint holds light with a static grain, while the lime plasters above have depth that changes with the day.
