Wall Murals in Dubai: Painted, Printed or a Textured Finish Instead?

A wall mural is the right choice when you want an image: a landscape, a pattern, a child’s room scene or a logo. In Dubai there are three ways to get one: a hand-painted mural by an artist, a printed wallpaper mural hung in panels, or a digital print applied to the wall. If what you actually want is a striking wall rather than a picture, a hand-finished lime or textured wall gives colour, depth and movement that a print cannot, and it is the part of this question we do. RBS does not paint or print murals. We apply Venetian plaster, marmorino, limewash and texture paints, so this guide tells you plainly where a mural is the better buy and where a finished wall is.

What is a wall mural, and what are the options in Dubai?

A wall mural is a large image or pattern that covers a whole wall or a large part of it. The word covers three different jobs:

• Hand-painted mural: an artist paints the image directly on a prepared wall. It is one of a kind and can follow the room’s shape, but it depends on the artist’s skill and takes days of work in the room.
• Printed wallpaper mural: the image is printed on rolls or panels and hung like wallpaper. It is the quickest route to a photographic image and can be taken down, but the seams between panels stay visible if you look for them.
• Digital print on the wall: a print is applied or produced straight onto a smooth wall. It suits flat, even surfaces and large images; it needs a wall that is already in good condition.

None of these is a plaster or paint finish in the sense we use the words: they give you a picture, not a surface with its own depth. We do not supply or install any of the three, and we would rather say so than pretend.

Mural or textured wall: which one do you actually want?

The question to ask is whether you want to look at an image or to feel a room. A mural is about the image: it tells a story, so it suits a nursery, a children’s room, a restaurant feature wall, a themed room or a brand wall. A lime or textured finish is about the wall itself: cloudy colour, a soft sheen, a surface that changes with the light. It suits a living room, a majlis, a hotel corridor or a bedroom headboard wall, where the wall is calm and the furniture and art carry the picture.

Do wall murals last in the UAE?

It depends on the wall and the method. UAE homes have air conditioning that dries rooms out and humid air in summer, and both are hard on glued paper. A printed mural can lift at the seams if the wall is damp, if an outside-facing wall sweats, or if the AC dries the room hard. A painted mural on a sound, dry, properly prepared wall holds well, and a sound wall is the main condition for any of the three. Direct sun fades printed and painted images over the years, so a wall that gets strong afternoon light is a place to ask the artist or supplier about fade resistance before you commit.

The honest advice: check the wall first. A damp patch, a crack or a flaking old paint layer will show through a mural and spoil it. If the wall is not sound, fix it before anything goes on top.

When is a plain finished wall better than a mural?

• The room is for living, not for a theme. A mural fixes one picture on the wall for years. A lime or textured finish stays quiet and works with whatever you hang or place in front of it.
• You will want to change the room. Painting over a mural is a job; a mineral wall does not date.
• The wall is large and in a formal space. Majlis, reception and lobby walls usually look better with a hand-troweled finish than with a printed scene.
• You want the wall to age well. Limewash and lime plasters soften with time instead of peeling.

When is a mural the better choice?

Choose a mural when the image is the point: a children’s room, a restaurant or café, a brand wall, a themed space, or a rental where you need something you can remove. Choose a printed wallpaper mural when speed and low commitment matter, and a painted mural when you want something unique and are happy to pay an artist for the days of work. In those cases we are not the right company, and a mural artist or wallpaper supplier is.

Can you put a mural over limewash or plaster?
