Wall Texture Designs for UAE Homes: Eight Finishes, From Smooth to Carved
A wall texture design is the feel and look of the surface itself, and in a UAE home it comes down to eight honest choices: smooth and polished (Venetian plaster or marmorino), smooth and matte (microcement), cloudy and chalky (limewash), fine and sandy (texture paint), soft like fabric (velvet or suede effect), shimmering (metallic plaster), stone-pored (travertino) and carved (sgraffito). Pick by how much texture you can live with, how much you will touch or clean the wall, and whether the room is dry and calm or busy.
Most people search “wall texture design” with a picture in mind, not a product. This guide goes the other way round: start from the texture you can see in your head, and we tell you which finish makes it and where it stops working. For the painted-texture route alone, our texture paint guide goes deeper. For picking one hero wall by mood, see accent wall ideas.
Which wall texture is best for a UAE home?
There is no single best texture, but there is a best texture per wall. In a dry, air-conditioned villa or apartment, almost every texture below works indoors. The choice is really about three things: relief (how much you can feel and see the texture), cleanability (can you wipe it) and cost and time (a painted texture is two coats, a carved lime panel is a craftsman’s week).
Eight wall texture designs side by side
| Texture | How it looks and feels | Best for | Honest limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smooth polished (Venetian plaster, marmorino) | Depth like polished stone, a soft sheen, cool and smooth to the hand | Living rooms, entrance halls, formal dining | Not for constant splashing; a considered finish, not a cheap one |
| Smooth matte (microcement) | Seamless, calm, fine trowel marks, 2–3 mm thick | Modern living spaces, feature walls, wet zones when sealed | Starts from AED 220/m²; tonal movement is part of it, so it will never look flat like paint |
| Cloudy chalky (limewash) | Soft matte with drifting light and dark, like old Mediterranean walls | Bedrooms, hallways, ceilings, sheltered courtyard walls | A wash, not a plaster, so no relief; can chalk if brushed against |
| Fine sandy (texture paint) | A light tooth you can feel, from fine sand to coarse stone effect | Whole-room schemes, rentals, quick refreshes | A thin film: it imitates minerals rather than being one |
| Soft like fabric (velvet or suede effect) | A fine nap that changes tone as you move | Bedrooms, headboard walls, dressing rooms | Dislikes hard scrubbing; low-traffic adult spaces |
| Shimmer (metallic plaster) | Mica catches light: champagne from one side, bronze from the other | One feature wall, lobbies, majlis | Shows every ripple in the wall under raking light; one wall usually beats four |
| Stone-pored (travertino) | Open pores and quiet banding, like Roman travertine | Entrance halls, living rooms, studies | Interior walls, away from constant wetting |
| Carved pattern (sgraffito) | A design scratched through two coloured lime layers | Entrance halls, niches, restaurant and boutique walls | Hand work that costs more and takes longer; the pattern is permanent |
These are all wall finishes, and RBS is responsible for every job. Microcement and the lime finishes (Venetian plaster, marmorino, limewash, travertino, sgraffito) are applied by our own trained in-house crews.
Smooth or rough: which feels better in a hot country?
Smooth textures win in the UAE for a practical reason: dust. Fine sand settles on everything here, and a deeply relief-heavy wall holds it in every ridge. A smooth lime or microcement wall wipes cleaner than a heavy knockdown or coarse-sand finish. Rough textures earn their place in sheltered, low-touch spots such as a bedroom feature wall, a ceiling, or a courtyard wall where character matters more than wiping.
If you want texture you can see but not trap dust in, the middle of the table is the sweet spot: limewash for soft movement, a fine texture paint for a light tooth, velvet effect for something you will actually want to touch.
Can you get a wall texture without it looking dated?
Yes, by choosing a finish where the texture comes from the material and not from a pattern stamped over it. A hand-trowelled lime plaster or microcement wall has movement that is never repeated, so it does not read as “that 2010 sponged look”. The pattern-led choices (carved sgraffito, a metallic shimmer) work when they are the one deliberate statement in the room, not the whole room. A calm base wall with one textured feature wall is almost always the safer design.
Which texture hides wall imperfections?
A uniform smooth finish shows every ripple; a textured one forgives. Cloudy limewash, sandy texture paint and a travertino pore pattern all hide hairline marks and small unevenness well. Shimmering and polished finishes are the least forgiving: raking light finds every wave in the wall underneath, so the preparation is most of the work. Our guide do texture paints hide wall imperfections covers what texture can and cannot cover. Cracks that move need repairing first, whatever finish goes on top.
What about wet rooms, kitchens and outdoor walls?
Not every texture belongs everywhere. Be honest about the room:
- Showers and splash zones: sealed microcement or tadelakt, not limewash, velvet effect or metallic plaster.
- Kitchen walls behind a hob or sink: a wipeable, sealed finish. Soft textures that dislike scrubbing are the wrong choice here.
- Outdoor walls: limewash and sgraffito can go on a sheltered wall. Microcement outdoors only in its outdoor-rated colours, and only for terraces, balconies and outside walls, never driveways. Velvet, metallic plaster and travertino are interior finishes.
- Everywhere else indoors: any of the eight, chosen by mood and cleaning habits.
Which wall texture should you choose?
- You want calm and modern: microcement, or a fine limewash.
- You want warmth and softness: limewash, clay-effect texture paint, or velvet effect.
- You want luxury and depth: Venetian plaster or marmorino for polish, metallic plaster for shimmer.
- You want character with a stone feel: travertino.
- You want a true statement wall: sgraffito, in one place.
- You want it quick and economical across a whole villa: texture paint.
RBS Group does not supply wallpaper, wall panels or off-the-shelf paint; if what you picture is a printed or panelled wall, wallpaper or panels are the honest answer, and we compare them in wallpaper vs plaster finishes. If you want the texture itself made in the wall, send us a photo of the wall or the look you like on WhatsApp or call +971 4 587 7086. Wall finishes are priced per project after a site visit, and we will tell you plainly which texture suits the room and which does not.

FAQ
What are the different types of wall texture?
In a UAE home the useful types are smooth polished (Venetian plaster, marmorino), smooth matte (microcement), cloudy chalky (limewash), fine sandy (texture paint), soft like fabric (velvet or suede effect), shimmering (metallic plaster), stone-pored (travertino) and carved (sgraffito). Each is compared in the table above.
What is the best wall texture for a living room?
For most living rooms, a smooth polished lime plaster or a fine limewash gives depth without trapping dust. Microcement suits a modern, seamless look. A single textured feature wall with calm walls around it is the safest design.
Which wall texture is easiest to clean?
Smooth sealed finishes: microcement and polished lime plasters wipe cleanest. Heavy relief and soft textures such as velvet effect hold dust or dislike scrubbing, so they suit low-traffic rooms.
Is a textured wall cheaper than a smooth one?
Not always. A sandy texture paint is the quickest and most economical route across a large area, while a hand-carved or polished lime wall costs more because it is slow, skilled work. Wall finishes are priced per project after a site visit, except microcement, which starts from AED 220/m².
Can you put wall texture over existing paint or plaster?
Usually yes, on a sound, well-prepared interior wall. Loose paint, damp or moving cracks must be fixed first. Send a photo on WhatsApp and we will say what the wall needs.
Does wall texture work with UAE humidity and air conditioning?
Yes, indoors. Mineral finishes such as limewash and clay-effect plasters are breathable and cope well with humid coastal air. Keep soft or shimmering finishes out of showers and splash zones.
Does RBS apply wallpaper or wall panels?
No. RBS applies seamless finishes made in the wall itself. For wallpaper or panelled walls we recommend a specialist supplier, and we say so honestly when that is the better fit.
