Outdoor Flooring in Dubai: Tiles, Pavers or a Seamless Floor?

The best outdoor flooring in Dubai depends on where the floor is and who walks on it. For an open villa terrace, garden path or pool surround walked barefoot, a pale resin bound stone surface is usually the most forgiving: no grout lines, water drains through, and no joints for sand to fill. Outdoor porcelain tiles are a good, often cheaper choice where the floor is covered or shaded and shoes are worn — choose a slip rating made for wet outdoor use, and expect grout to need cleaning. Interlock pavers are the low-cost answer for a parking area, and the price you pay is re-sanding and weeds in the joints. Where children play, poured rubber; on a balcony or covered terrace, microcement in its outdoor-rated colours. And whatever you choose: no outdoor floor stays cool in direct August sun — shade and pale colours do more than any material.

We should say plainly what we do and do not do. RBS does not supply or lay tiles, natural stone, interlock pavers, decking or artificial grass. We lay seamless surfaces: stone carpet in Dubai, poured rubber and microcement. This guide compares all of them, because on many terraces a tile or a paver is the right answer, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong floor.

What makes outdoor flooring hard in Dubai?

Four things wear an outdoor floor in the UAE: sun, heat, sand and water from irrigation or splash. A floor that looks perfect in a showroom has to survive all four for years.

  • Sun. UV fades colours and breaks down some coatings. Gloss epoxy, for example, yellows in UV, which is why it does not belong outside.
  • Heat. Dark surfaces in direct summer sun get too hot for bare feet, whatever they are made of. Pale tones and shade are the real cooling strategy.
  • Sand. Wind brings sand into every joint, gap and textured surface. Joints between tiles and pavers fill; boards on a deck trap it underneath.
  • Water. Irrigation, pool splash and the occasional winter downpour. A floor that sheds water into puddles is slippery; a floor that lets it soak in the wrong place stains or loosens.

Outdoor tiles in Dubai: what to look for

Outdoor porcelain is the most common outdoor tile in the UAE, and a good one: it does not fade, it is hard-wearing, and it comes in stone, wood and concrete looks. It is often the cheapest way to get a smart, uniform terrace, and a tiling contractor can lay it quickly. What to check before you buy:

  • A slip rating for wet outdoor use. Indoor porcelain, especially polished or glazed, is slippery when wet. Ask the supplier for the tile’s outdoor slip rating and choose a textured, matt finish for anything near a pool or a sprinkler.
  • Thickness and how it is laid. Thicker outdoor porcelain (often sold as 2 cm pavers) can sit on a bed or on pedestals over a roof membrane; standard tiles need a full, solid adhesive bed. Hollow spots under a tile are where cracks start.
  • Movement joints. UAE slabs heat and cool every day. A tiled terrace needs movement joints, or tiles can lift and crack along a line.
  • Grout. Outdoor grout fills with sand and darkens. Plan on scrubbing it, and choose a grout colour close to the sand you see every day.

Tiles are the right choice when you want a crisp, regular pattern, the area is covered or walked in shoes, and you want a large choice of looks. Where they are less happy: open pool decks walked barefoot (joints, heat in dark colours, wet glaze), and areas that move or settle.

Natural stone outdoors: travertine, limestone and marble

Natural stone gives the richest outdoor look, and it asks for sealing and care. Travertine and limestone are popular around villa pools because they stay comparatively comfortable underfoot in pale colours. Their honest limits:

  • Porous. Natural stone absorbs water, oil and sunscreen. A sealer slows stains; it does not make stone stain-proof, and it needs renewing.
  • Holes and edges. Unfilled travertine has natural holes that collect sand and dirt; filled travertine can lose its filler over time.
  • Polished stone is slippery wet. Polished marble belongs indoors. Outside, choose honed, brushed or tumbled finishes — see marble flooring in Dubai for the indoor side of that story.

If the look of real stone is the point, buy it from a stone specialist and budget for sealing. If you want a stone texture without the joints, resin bound is made of natural stone bound in clear resin — a different look, but no grout lines.

Interlock pavers: the low-cost outdoor floor

Interlock pavers are the cheapest common way to pave a driveway or parking area in Dubai, and a single broken block can be lifted and replaced. They are concrete or clay blocks laid over a compacted base and bedding sand, locked together with jointing sand. Their honest costs come later:

  • Joint sand washes and blows out, so the blocks need re-sanding to stop them rocking.
  • Weeds grow in the joints wherever irrigation or shade keeps them damp.
  • Blocks can settle or lift under heavy turning loads or tree roots, and need re-bedding.

For a parking area on a tight budget, pavers are an honest choice, not a compromise. For a front garden path or a terrace walked barefoot, the joints are the weakness. We compared both for driveways in resin bound vs interlock pavers.

Seamless outdoor flooring: what we lay

A seamless outdoor floor has no joints for sand, weeds or grout to fill — that is its main advantage in the UAE. We lay three, each for a different place.

Resin bound stone carpet — terraces, paths, pool surrounds and driveways. Natural stone bound in clear UV-stable resin, laid on a sound base. It is permeable: irrigation and pool splash drain through instead of sitting in a film, which is a large part of why it grips under wet feet. Rounded stone is comfortable barefoot, and pale blends stay far more comfortable in the sun than dark tiles. It starts from AED 170/m², plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project, and the quote after the site visit can be higher where the base needs work. Its honest limits: it needs a sound base (it is not laid loose over sand), and a badly damaged patch is blended in rather than lifted out like a paver. For driveways, see resin bound driveways in Dubai.

Poured rubber — play areas and kids’ pool aprons. A seamless rubber surface poured on site, soft under falls and draining rather than sealed. It is priced per project after a site visit, because the cushioning depth set by any play equipment drives the cost. Its honest limits: bright colours fade in UAE sun and dark rubber gets hot, so choose calmer or lighter tones and add shade. Where it belongs and where it does not is set out in rubber safety flooring for playgrounds and pool edges.

Microcement — balconies and covered terraces, in outdoor-rated colours only. Part of the microcement range is rated for outdoor as well as indoor use; the rest is indoor-only. On a balcony, a covered terrace or an outside wall with normal foot traffic, we use only the outdoor-rated colours, with a textured finish where it gets wet. It goes over sound existing tiles at about 3 mm, so a balcony door threshold barely changes. Floors start from AED 250/m², wet zones from AED 350/m². Its honest limits: it is best under a roof or in shade, the sealer wants renewing more often outside than inside, and microcement is never for driveways, cars or heavy use.

Outdoor flooring for a balcony

On a Dubai apartment balcony, the realistic choices are new outdoor tiles, a deck on pedestals, or microcement over the existing tiles. Building rules come first: many towers control what can be fixed to a balcony and how drainage is kept clear, so ask building management before you choose.

  • Outdoor tiles — the standard answer; removing old tiles is noisy and dusty work in an occupied building.
  • Decking or interlocking deck tiles — no demolition and removable for renters; sand and dust collect underneath. See decking in Dubai.
  • Microcement in an outdoor-rated colour — seamless, over sound tiles, no demolition, about 3 mm thick. An 8 m² balcony floor starts from around AED 2,000 (8 × AED 250).

Artificial grass on a balcony looks soft in photos and gets hot and dusty in practice — we compared it honestly in artificial grass vs poured rubber vs resin bound.

Which outdoor flooring stays coolest?

No outdoor floor stays cool in direct UAE summer sun — colour and shade matter more than the material. Pale surfaces reflect more sun and stay more comfortable than dark ones, whether they are tiles, stone, resin bound or rubber. Some practical rules:

  • Choose the palest tone you can live with where people walk barefoot.
  • Put shade over the area you use at midday: a pergola, a sail or a tree does more than any floor.
  • Avoid dark tiles, dark rubber and dark composite boards in full sun.

What does outdoor flooring cost in Dubai?

We can only price the surfaces we lay — for tiles, stone, pavers and decking, get two or three written quotes that include the base preparation, not just the material. The base is where cheap outdoor floors fail first.

For our surfaces: resin bound starts from AED 170/m², plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project — a 40 m² terrace starts from around AED 10,300 (40 × 170 + 3,500), and the quote after the site visit can be higher if the base needs work. Microcement floors start from AED 250/m², wet zones from AED 350/m², with no mobilization fee. Poured rubber is priced per project after a site visit. When you compare, compare the whole life: grout scrubbing, resealing or re-sanding against washing a seamless surface. The full resin breakdown is in the resin bound cost guide.

Which one should you choose?

  • Covered terrace or walkway, shoes on, you want a regular pattern: outdoor porcelain tiles with a wet-outdoor slip rating.
  • Villa terrace or pool edge where real stone is the point: honed or tumbled travertine or limestone, sealed — from a stone specialist.
  • Parking area on the lowest budget: interlock pavers, and accept the re-sanding.
  • Open terrace, garden path, pool surround or driveway walked barefoot: resin bound stone in a pale blend.
  • Children play there: poured rubber, in calmer colours.
  • Balcony or covered terrace, one seamless surface from inside to out: microcement in an outdoor-rated colour, over the existing tiles if they are sound.
  • Roof terrace over a membrane, or a raised platform: decking on pedestals.

FAQ

What is the best outdoor flooring for Dubai heat?

A pale surface in shade. No outdoor floor stays cool in direct summer sun, so colour and shade matter more than the material. For an open area walked barefoot, a pale resin bound stone surface is usually the most comfortable choice we lay; dark tiles, dark rubber and dark composite boards get the hottest.

Are outdoor tiles slippery?

They can be. Polished and glazed tiles are slippery when wet. Choose an outdoor porcelain with a slip rating made for wet outdoor use and a textured, matt finish, especially near a pool or sprinklers. Resin bound stays grippy because water drains through it instead of sitting on top.

What is the cheapest outdoor flooring in Dubai?

Interlock pavers and standard outdoor tiles are usually the cheapest to install, but ask for written quotes that include base preparation. Factor in upkeep too: re-sanding pavers and scrubbing grout. Resin bound starts from AED 170/m², plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project, and needs no re-sanding or grout cleaning.

Can microcement be used outdoors in Dubai?

Yes, in the outdoor-rated colours only — part of the microcement range is indoor-only. It suits balconies, covered terraces and outside walls with normal foot traffic, best under a roof or in shade. It is never for driveways, cars or heavy use. Floors start from AED 250/m².

Do you install outdoor tiles or pavers?

No. RBS does not supply or lay tiles, natural stone, interlock pavers, decking or artificial grass. We lay seamless surfaces — resin bound stone carpet, poured rubber and microcement. If tiles or pavers are the right answer for your terrace, a tiling or paving contractor is the right company, and we will say so.
