Travertine Tiles in the UAE: Floors, Pool Decks and Walls — An Honest Guide
Travertine tiles are a good choice in the UAE where you want real stone with a warm, natural look — villa terraces, pool surrounds, entrance halls and bathrooms walked barefoot. Pale travertine stays comparatively comfortable underfoot outdoors, and a tumbled or honed finish grips far better than polished stone. Its weaknesses are the same as marble’s, plus one of its own: it is a calcium carbonate stone, so lemon, vinegar and acidic cleaners etch it; it is porous, so it needs sealing; and its natural holes collect sand unless they are filled. Choose filled and honed tiles indoors, tumbled or brushed pavers outside, seal them, and clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. If you want the travertine look with no joints, a travertino lime plaster does it on walls, and on floors the seamless routes are microcement indoors and resin bound stone outside.
A word on who is writing this. RBS applies seamless surfaces — microcement, lime plasters, resin bound stone. We do not supply, lay, polish or restore travertine or any other stone. That is why we can be plain about it: on many terraces and floors real travertine is the right answer, and we would rather say so than sell you something else.
What is travertine?
Travertine is a natural limestone formed where mineral-rich spring water deposits calcium carbonate in layers; the gas bubbles trapped as it formed leave its typical holes and banding. It comes in creams, ivories, beiges, walnuts and silvers, and it has been used for floors, steps and facades since Roman times.
Two things follow from what it is:
- It is soft and acid-sensitive, like marble. Calcium carbonate reacts with acids, so citrus, vinegar, many limescale removers and some bathroom sprays leave dull marks. That is etching — a change to the stone surface, not a stain you can wipe off.
- It is full of holes. The voids run through the stone. Factories either fill them (with a cement-based or resin filler, usually tinted to match) or leave them open. Which one you buy changes how the floor lives.
Travertine tiles: pros and cons in the UAE
| Pros | Cons | |
|---|---|---|
| Heat and sun | Pale colours stay comparatively comfortable underfoot; the stone is unaffected by heat | No floor stays cool in direct August sun — shade still matters |
| Grip | Tumbled, brushed and honed finishes grip well, including wet | Polished travertine is slippery when wet |
| Looks | Warm, natural, varied; ages well | Every batch differs; matching a repair years later is hard |
| Chemistry | Easy to clean with the right cleaner | Acids etch it; oils and sunscreen can stain it |
| Holes | Unfilled stone has a rustic, open texture | Open holes collect sand and dirt; filler can loosen over time |
| Lifespan | Decades; honed or polished floors can be re-ground by a stone specialist | Needs sealing and re-sealing |
| Joints | Tumbled pavers can be laid with tight joints | It is still a tiled floor — grout lines collect sand |
Filled vs unfilled travertine
Filled travertine has its holes closed at the factory and is the practical choice for most indoor floors; unfilled travertine keeps the open holes and suits a rustic outdoor look where you accept the cleaning.
- Filled: a smooth face that is easy to mop and that sand cannot sink into. Honed-and-filled is the common choice for villa interiors and bathrooms. Over the years some filler can work loose and leave a small hole; a stone specialist can refill it.
- Unfilled: the natural, open surface — beautiful on a pool deck or a courtyard, and the holes drain a little water, but they also fill with sand, leaves and pool debris. Some owners let the holes fill naturally with grout or sand when the floor is laid.
Travertine finishes: polished, honed, tumbled or brushed?
Pick the finish by where the floor is, not by the showroom sample.
- Polished: a high gloss. Indoors, in dry rooms only, and it shows etching and scratches most.
- Honed: a flat, smooth matt face. The sensible indoor default — kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms — because it hides etch marks better and grips better than polished.
- Tumbled: softened, rounded edges and an aged, textured face. The classic pool-deck and terrace finish.
- Brushed: a textured, slightly undulating face between honed and tumbled; good grip, softer look.
Outside, pavers are thicker than indoor tiles so they can be laid on a proper base. Ask the supplier what thickness they recommend for your base and use.
Travertine around the pool
Tumbled or brushed travertine pavers are one of the most popular pool surrounds in UAE villas, and with the right finish and sealer they are a good one. Pale stone stays more comfortable under bare feet than dark tiles or composite boards, and the textured face grips when wet.
What to plan for:
- Seal it. Pool water, sunscreen, oils and splash from the barbecue soak into unsealed stone. A penetrating sealer slows staining; it does not make the stone stain-proof, and it needs renewing.
- Pool water and salts. Check with your pool company how the pool’s water treatment affects natural stone, and rinse the deck with fresh water. White salt deposits (efflorescence) can appear on stone and grout as water evaporates; they usually brush or wash off, and they come back while water keeps moving through the base.
- Sand. On a garden-side deck, sand settles in joints and open holes. Filled pavers and a regular rinse keep it down.
If you want no grout lines at all around the pool, resin bound stone is natural stone bound in clear resin: permeable, so splash drains through instead of standing in a film, and comfortable barefoot in a pale blend. The full comparison, including tiles and stone, is in our pool deck materials guide, and the resin route on its own is in resin bound pool surrounds.
Travertine in bathrooms and kitchens
Travertine works in a bathroom if it is filled, honed and sealed — and if nobody uses acidic cleaners on it. The risk is not water; it is chemistry. Limescale removers, vinegar sprays and many “bathroom” products are acids and etch the stone. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner, squeegee the shower, and re-seal as the stone needs it.
In kitchens, travertine floors are fine with the same care; as a worktop or splashback it is a high-maintenance choice, because lemon, tomato and vinegar land on it every day.
How to care for travertine tiles in the UAE
Keep the sand out, clean pH-neutral, wipe acids at once, keep it sealed.
- Mats at every door — desert sand scratches honed and polished stone and fills open holes.
- Dry-mop or vacuum first, then mop with a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
- No vinegar, lemon, limescale remover or bleach-based spray on the stone. Check what your cleaning service brings.
- Wipe spills quickly, above all juice, wine, coffee and oil.
- Felt pads under furniture on honed and polished floors.
- Re-seal when water stops beading and starts darkening the stone quickly. How often depends on the sealer, the finish and how much use and sun the floor gets — ask the stone supplier or restorer to test it.
An old travertine floor: restore, replace or cover?
Many Dubai villas have travertine floors that are sound but tired — dull walkways, etched patches, loose filler, dated colours. Three routes:
- Restore it — if you still like the stone. A stone restoration specialist refills holes, grinds out etching and scratches, re-hones or re-polishes and re-seals. It keeps the stone and is usually the least disruptive way back.
- Replace it — if many tiles are cracked or hollow, or the look is the problem. That means demolition, debris and a new bed; in an apartment, building approval first.
- Cover it with microcement (indoors) — if you want a seamless, modern floor without demolition. Microcement goes over sound, well-bonded stone the same way it goes over existing tiles: open holes and loose filler are filled, the surface is keyed so the base coat grips, hollow tiles are re-fixed, joints are bridged, and the finish adds about 3 mm. Microcement floors start from AED 250/m² and wet zones from AED 350/m²; a 30 m² living area starts from around AED 7,500, with the quote after a site visit.
The honest limits of route 3: once the travertine is covered, it is gone from view — only cover stone you have decided you no longer want. Microcement is for homes and normal-use rooms, not heavy-use floors. Outside, it only goes on terraces, balconies and outside walls in its outdoor-rated colours, never on driveways; a sunny pool deck is better served by resin bound. And a floor that sounds hollow across whole areas has a failing bed — coating over it would inherit the failure, so it needs replacing.

How much do travertine tiles cost in the UAE?
We cannot give you an honest travertine price, because we do not supply or lay it. The cost depends on the grade and colour of stone, filled or unfilled, finish, tile or paver thickness, the pattern (a mixed “French pattern” has more cuts than a single size), the base preparation, the fixer’s labour and the sealing. Ask two or three stone suppliers for written quotes that include fixing, sealing and base work — not just the stone.
What we can price is the seamless route: resin bound starts from AED 170/m², plus a one-off AED 3,500 mobilization fee per project, so a 50 m² pool surround starts from around AED 12,000 — a starting figure; the quote after the site visit can be higher where the base needs work. Microcement floors start from AED 250/m², walls from AED 220/m² and wet zones from AED 350/m²; the breakdown is in our microcement cost guide.
Travertine on the walls
On a wall, the travertine look does not need the stone. Walls carry no traffic, no sand and almost no spills, so the weaknesses of real travertine barely matter — but its weight, joints and fixing still do. A travertino lime plaster recreates travertine’s banding and pores in hand-laid lime, seamless, light and able to follow curves; it is for interior walls and is priced per project after a site visit. For real stone on walls, including thin flexible stone sheets, see stone wall cladding in the UAE.
Which one should you choose?
- You want real stone around the pool or on an open terrace: tumbled or brushed travertine pavers, sealed, from a stone specialist.
- You want a travertine floor indoors: filled and honed tiles, sealed, with mats at the doors and a pH-neutral cleaner.
- You want the look with almost no upkeep: travertine-look porcelain from a tile supplier. It is the practical choice, and we would tell you so.
- You want no grout lines outside: resin bound stone in a pale blend.
- You have a tired travertine floor indoors and want something seamless and modern: microcement over it, in homes and normal-use rooms.
- You want travertine on a feature wall: travertino lime plaster.

FAQ
Are travertine tiles good for the UAE climate?
Yes. Heat and sun do not harm travertine, and pale colours stay comparatively comfortable underfoot outside. The problems in the UAE are sand, which scratches the surface and fills open holes, and acidic cleaners, which etch it — not the climate.
Is travertine slippery?
Polished travertine is slippery when wet. Tumbled, brushed and honed finishes grip much better, which is why tumbled pavers are the usual choice around pools.
Should I choose filled or unfilled travertine?
Filled for most indoor floors and bathrooms: it is smooth, easy to mop and sand cannot sink into it. Unfilled for a rustic outdoor look, if you accept that the holes collect sand and debris.
Does travertine need sealing?
Yes. It is porous, so a penetrating sealer slows staining from oil, sunscreen, coffee and pool splash. Sealing does not stop acids from etching the stone, and it needs renewing over time.
Is travertine better than porcelain?
Travertine is real stone with natural depth, and it can be restored for decades; porcelain barely reacts to acids, sand or water and needs no sealing. Choose travertine for the stone itself, porcelain for low upkeep.
Can microcement go over travertine tiles?
Indoors, yes, if the stone is sound and well bonded: holes are filled, the surface is keyed, hollow tiles are re-fixed and the joints are bridged, adding about 3 mm. It is for homes and normal-use rooms; floors start from AED 250/m². Once covered, the travertine is no longer visible.
Does RBS supply or install travertine?
No. We do not supply, lay, polish or restore travertine. A stone supplier or restoration specialist is the right call for that. We apply seamless surfaces — microcement, lime plasters and resin bound stone — including over sound existing floors.
