What loose gravel actually gets you

Loose gravel is cheap and instant: tip it, rake it, done. It drains freely by definition, and it can look genuinely handsome laid deep over a weed-membrane base. That is the whole case for it, and it is real — for a low-budget temporary area, a back-of-plot utility yard, or ground cover around planting where nobody walks regularly, loose gravel is a perfectly reasonable, honest choice.

The problems start the moment the area gets real use. In the UAE specifically:

• Wind and traffic migrate it. Gulf wind gusts and vehicle tyres carry loose stone off the bed and onto adjacent paving, pool decks and indoors on shoes — a maintenance nuisance that never stops.
• It compacts, ruts and thins. Vehicle weight and foot traffic gradually push stone down and sideways; a gravel driveway needs periodic raking and topping up to keep an even depth, indefinitely.
• Weeds root in it. Gaps between loose stones are exactly where seeds establish, especially once organic dust and soil accumulate in the base over a few seasons.
• It is genuinely uncomfortable underfoot for bare feet, prams, wheeled luggage or a wheelchair — loose stone shifts under weight in a way a bound surface never does.

What resin-bound (stone carpet) changes

Resin-bound uses the same category of natural aggregate — fine gravel, quartz, sometimes marble — but every stone is fully coated in clear resin and hand-trowelled into one locked, seamless surface. The tiny voids between stones stay open, so it remains genuinely permeable: rain drains straight through into the base rather than pooling, the same practical benefit loose gravel offers, without the stone ever migrating. Nothing to rake, nothing to top up, no dust cloud in a shamal wind, and a surface smooth and stable enough for prams, bare feet and vehicles at the right build-up.

It is not free of upkeep — the pores want an occasional wash to keep draining freely, and like any bound surface it depends entirely on a sound, well-prepared base beneath it. But that is a wash now and then, not a standing maintenance job.
