Epoxy Mortar Screed
Trowel-applied epoxy mortar laid 4–9 mm thick — the toughest floor in the epoxy family, built for impact, point loads and forklift traffic, and for rebuilding broken slabs.
What it is
An epoxy mortar screed is what the epoxy family builds when it stops being a coating and becomes a material. Epoxy resin is mixed with graded quartz aggregate into a stiff, almost-dry mortar, spread by hand and compacted under the trowel at four to nine millimetres — ten times the thickness of a rolled coat. Sealed with epoxy top coats, it cures into a dense, seamless slab of resin-bound stone: the floor you specify where things get dropped, where forklifts turn on the spot, and where racking legs press a building’s weight through a few square centimetres.
Thickness is the whole argument. A thin coating is only ever as strong as the concrete under it — hit it hard enough and the substrate fails first. A mortar screed has its own structural body: it absorbs impact, spreads point loads and takes steel-wheeled traffic that would cut through any paint-thickness system. The same body makes it the repair material of the trade — we use it to rebuild spalled patches, worn ramps and broken joint edges, bringing a tired slab back to level before any finer floor, from Poured Epoxy to Flake Epoxy, goes over it.
Honesty about its character: this is an industrial floor and it looks like one. The trowelled, sealed surface is clean, even and quietly textured — functional, never showroom-glossy. Poured epoxy is the thin, elegant sibling, the one that levels itself into glass; the mortar is the strong one, and no seal coat turns muscle into mirror. For the same reason it is usually the wrong buy at home: a villa garage or home gym will never load it hard enough to justify the cost, and a flake floor there looks better for less. Like every epoxy it also ambers slowly under UV, so it stays indoors or under cover.
Where it comes from
Epoxy mortars come from the heavy end of post-war industrial flooring — engineers looking for a repair and topping material that bonded to concrete, out-performed it in compression, and resisted the oils and chemicals that destroy cement screeds. The trowelled epoxy screed became the standard answer under Europe’s forklifts and process plants, and it has not been improved on so much as refined. In the UAE the demand walks through our door from the working side of the economy — workshops, warehousing, industrial kitchens, loading bays serving round-the-clock logistics — and from older slabs that need honest rebuilding before they can carry anything new. It is the least glamorous floor we lay, and for the buildings that need it, the most valuable.
