Wallpaper is the better choice when you want a printed pattern, a low budget, a fast change or a wall you can take back when you move out: a good installer papers a room in a day, and nothing in plaster can give you a botanical print or a child’s mural. A seamless plaster finish — Venetian plaster, marmorino, limewash or microcement — is the better choice for a wall you own and want to last in UAE conditions: no seams to lift when the AC dries the room out, no vinyl skin to trap condensation on an outside-facing wall, and a surface that is repaired in place instead of re-papered. RBS applies the plaster side of this page. We do not supply or hang wallpaper, so read the wallpaper sections as advice from people with nothing to sell you there — including where we tell you to buy it.
This page is about wallpaper. If you are weighing PVC, WPC or fluted panels instead, the same question is answered in wall panels vs plaster finishes — panels are fixed sheets with joints; wallpaper is a glued skin with seams, and they fail in different ways.
What kinds of wallpaper are sold in Dubai and the UAE?
“Wallpaper” in a Dubai showroom covers several very different products. The type matters more than the pattern, because it decides how the wall behaves in heat, humidity and air conditioning:
- Paper and non-woven wallpaper — printed paper or a fleece-like non-woven base. Non-woven is the modern standard: it is pasted on the wall rather than the sheet, it does not stretch when wet, and most types strip off dry in one piece.
- Vinyl wallpaper — a paper or fabric base with a plastic (PVC) face. Hard-wearing and wipeable, which is why it is the hotel-corridor default, but the face is close to waterproof.
- Fabric and textile wallpaper — silk, linen, grasscloth and other woven faces. Beautiful, warm, and the most delicate of the group.
- 3D wallpaper — the name is used for two things: deeply embossed or printed papers that imitate brick, stone or panelling, and self-adhesive foam “3D wall stickers” sold in tiles. They are not the same product, and the foam type behaves very differently.
- Peel-and-stick wallpaper — a self-adhesive vinyl film, sold as the renter-friendly option.
- Murals — a single large printed image across a whole wall, usually on non-woven or vinyl.
All of them are a thin skin glued to the wall and joined at seams; plaster finishes have no seams at all. Most differences below follow from that.

Wallpaper in UAE humidity and AC: what actually goes wrong
Wallpaper is glued, and glue is the weak point in this climate. Most UAE homes swing between humid outside air and air-conditioned, dry inside air every day. Paper and paste move with that cycle, and over time the seams are where it shows: a lifted edge at head height, a corner peeling behind a door, a join that has opened into a visible line. A good installer who primes the wall and uses the right paste reduces this a lot; a rushed job on an unprimed wall shows it within a summer.
The second problem is less visible and more serious. Vinyl wallpaper on an outside-facing wall in a coastal building is a mould sandwich. Warm, humid air meets a wall cooled by the AC, moisture condenses inside the wall, and the vinyl face stops it drying out to the room. The black spots appear behind the paper, so nobody sees them until a seam is lifted. We explain the physics in our guide to wall finishes, humidity and AC. On an internal partition in a dry bedroom the risk is low. On a damp or outside-facing wall, fix the moisture first, or choose a finish that breathes.
Fabric and 3D wallpaper: what to know before you buy
Fabric wallpaper brings a warmth and softness no plaster copies. It is also the hardest to live with: it holds dust and cooking smells, spills mark it, and it is difficult to patch invisibly. Good for a bedroom headboard wall; poor for a kitchen, a children’s room or anywhere hands touch it often.
3D wallpaper is popular in Dubai feature walls, and the two kinds need separating. Embossed or printed “3D” papers behave like any other wallpaper of their base type. Self-adhesive foam wall tiles are a different thing: soft plastic foam that dents when knocked, can yellow over time, often pulls paint off the wall when removed, and is combustible — keep it away from cookers, heaters and light fittings. If what you want is real depth and movement in the light rather than a printed brick, a hand-trowelled marmorino or a travertino-effect plaster gives it without a seam or a foam tile.
Plaster finishes: what you get instead of wallpaper
A plaster finish is applied by hand, coat by coat, directly onto a sound wall. It cannot print a pattern, and it is not trying to. What it gives you is depth, light and a surface with no joins. The options we apply:
- Venetian plaster — polished lime, burnished until light sinks into it like marble. The formal choice for a living room, majlis or entrance. Priced per project after a site visit.
- Marmorino — a matte to satin lime plaster with soft, stony movement; the calm premium feature wall. See lime plaster in Dubai.
- Limewash — a brushed mineral wash with a cloudy, chalky depth; the most relaxed whole-room finish and the closest in spirit to a soft, textured wallpaper. How it differs from a burnished finish is set out in limewash vs Venetian plaster.
- Tadelakt — burnished, soaped lime that sheds water, for showers and wet rooms where wallpaper has no place.
- Microcement — a sealed cement coating a few millimetres thick, for walls that get touched and splashed or that continue onto a floor. Microcement walls start from AED 220/m², wet zones such as showers from AED 350/m², supply and install; our microcement walls guide covers where it belongs.
The lime family is vapour-open, so moisture passes through instead of being trapped, and cured lime’s high pH resists mould. Microcement works the other way — sealed, it keeps water out, which suits a splash zone.
Is wallpaper cheaper than plaster?
Usually, yes, and we will say so plainly. Wallpaper is normally the lower-cost, faster way to change a wall; hand-applied plaster costs more because the cost is skilled hours over several days plus curing time. Over the life of the wall the picture shifts: wallpaper dates and is replaced as a whole room, while a well-made lime wall is refreshed or repaired in place. What moves a plaster quote, and why a very small wall rarely works out at the per-metre rate, is in our feature wall cost guide.
Wallpaper installation vs plaster application: time and mess
Wallpaper installation is quick: the old paper is stripped, the wall filled and primed, and the room papered in a day or two; a heavy or textured paper even hides small flaws. Plaster takes longer: the coats go on one at a time and each must cure, so a feature wall is a few days of work and a whole room longer. Plaster does not hide a cracked or damp wall — the wall is repaired first, and we would rather say so at the site visit than plaster over a problem.
Renters vs owners
If you rent, non-woven or a good peel-and-stick wallpaper is often the honest answer, with the landlord’s written approval; it comes off when you leave, and a plaster finish would stay behind. If you own and plan to stay, a seamless wall with no seams to lift and no paper to re-hang becomes part of the property.
Which one should you choose?
- You want a pattern, a print or a mural: wallpaper. Plaster gives colour and movement, never a print. Buy it from a wallpaper supplier, not from us.
- A rental, a tight deadline or a small budget: non-woven or peel-and-stick wallpaper on a dry interior wall.
- A long-term feature wall, TV wall or majlis: Venetian plaster or marmorino — seamless, repairable, no seams to lift.
- An outside-facing or damp wall in a coastal building: a breathable lime finish, not vinyl; see breathable wall finishes.
- A kitchen splash zone, a bathroom or a shower: microcement or tadelakt — never fabric wallpaper, and only a specialist wet-room product if you insist on paper.
- A whole room that should feel calm and natural: limewash.

FAQ
Is wallpaper a good idea in Dubai’s humidity?
On a dry interior wall with good preparation, yes — non-woven wallpaper hung on a primed wall lasts well. The trouble spots are outside-facing and damp walls, where vinyl wallpaper can trap condensation and hide mould, and rooms where the AC dries the air hard, where poorly pasted seams lift.
What is the difference between vinyl and non-woven wallpaper?
Non-woven wallpaper has a fleece-like base that does not stretch when pasted and usually strips off dry in one piece. Vinyl wallpaper has a plastic face, which makes it wipeable and hard-wearing but close to waterproof, so it should not go on a wall that needs to dry out.
Is 3D wallpaper a good choice for a feature wall?
Embossed or printed 3D papers are fine where any wallpaper is fine. Self-adhesive foam 3D wall tiles are cheap and quick but dent easily, can yellow, often take paint with them when removed and are combustible, so keep them away from heat. For real depth, a textured plaster such as marmorino gives movement in the light without seams.
Can you put plaster over wallpaper?
No. Plaster needs a sound mineral or properly prepared surface; over wallpaper it would bond to the paper, and the paper would let go. The wallpaper is stripped, the wall repaired and primed, and then the plaster goes on.
Can you put wallpaper over Venetian plaster or limewash?
It is not a good idea. Polished Venetian plaster is too smooth and closed for paste to grip well, and limewash is a soft mineral surface that paste can pull away. If you want wallpaper on a plastered wall later, plan for proper preparation and priming by your wallpaper installer first.
Is wallpaper or plaster better for a bathroom?
Plaster, or more exactly a finish made for water: tadelakt or microcement over a waterproofing membrane in the shower (we compared tadelakt vs microcement for bathrooms), Venetian plaster or limewash on walls away from direct splashing. Paper and fabric wallpapers are a poor match for bathroom steam; only specialist wet-room products are designed for it.
Do you install wallpaper?
No. RBS applies seamless plaster and mineral finishes; we do not supply or hang wallpaper of any kind. If wallpaper is right for your wall, a wallpaper supplier and installer is the right call — and if you want the wall to become a seamless finish instead, we will quote that after a site visit.
